My son, a decent writer, dropped 90 points in the writing section. Anyone else with such a significant drop? How will schools look at this?

Don't worry...my writing score dropped 160 points...

They'll probably just take composite and ignore the low writing score...(I'm hoping =D)

I know most colleges take the composite, but how much does it hurt you if your new scores are lower (significantly or slightly) than your older scores?

buuuumppppppp

I wish I had an earlier writing score that was higher. This was my first time taking it and I got excellent CR + Math scores (800 + 790), but a 710 in writing. While I am certainly not complaining about a 2300 :D, I am unsure of whether or not it is worth it to retake the test for a better writing score. My instinct tells me no--a 710 is pretty good anyway and it won't have as much weight in admissions for a couple of years, but I wish someone could offer me a definitive answer. It would be nice to have a previous, higher writing score to fall back on for a better composite score, but I don't want to retake it and I'd probably get shot down for doing so.

The only reason I'm wondering if I should retake is because I know I can do better. On every practice test I did very well on the writing MC, and for some reason I didn't do as well on this version. I've been noticing that almost everyone has been doing comparitively poorly on the writing section, and it interests me...is there something wrong?

My writing score (the MC) was also significantly lower than what I expected.

My writing score dropped 60 points from March to October. The multiple choice stayed roughly the same, but my essay score dropped from a 12 to an 8. :( I don't think colleges are giving the writing scores the same consideration as math and CR scores this year, so hopefully that will work in your son's (and my) favor.

CB blue book projects me at like 650 - 790 and I come out with a 610..odd.

same happened for me... i had a 710 writing score in May and I got 650 this time around in October.... crap!!

Most people I've talked to so far have had a drop in writing. I actually improved significantly (580 --> 790).

I improved from a 580 to a 660!!

I too got much lower than I expected..
I expected around 700-730 but got 610
I blame it on a cold that I encountered for the 2nd half of the test =]
