its not a very good satire.

Actually, I don't think I misinterpreted the article at all and I'm sorry if I sounded annoying. The article presented white people as being disadvantaged compared to minorities in a sort of reverse-affirmative action kind of way. Perhaps her writing just didn't hit the point, and thus I grasped a different interpretation, but regardless, she started out the article in very bad taste by citing the benefits of the KKK, etc. Even a parent sitting behind me during one of the meetings commented on the crudeness of the editorial (not to mention that the author was a terrible writer...).

Duke, THE SCHOOL, however, is a GREAT PLACE! (and that's not satire, folks) When I visited, I loved it. I merely meant that the newspaper should be more careful about presenting sensitive articles/editorials to a diverse student body.

I'll agree that the essay could have been better written, her conclusions were careless and vague and the attention-grabbing opener only confused her thesis (clearly). I'm sorry her point got lost and she only managed to offend you and others.

I'm not a big fan of the Chronicle. The inane "staff" editorials make me crazy. But I don't think the paper should bear the responsibility of censoring voices, and in this particular case while she may have handled it clumsily, I think it was important that she present exactly what the White Nationalist movement is preaching (and the sick, slick way they're doing it). PC considerations aside, it's critical to know exactly what kind of madness we're dealing with here.

Satire or not, the author of the original post has quite an interesting idea. Yes, a college degree is often necessary to get a job, but schooling does not necessarily equal education. Some of the best education takes place outside of a formal school. To be frank, life in an American college doesn't prepare anyone for life in the real world, since 80% of the world doesn't live like Americans.

I'm curious as to what message the author of the article in the original post was trying to get at and what inspired him/her to write it.
