if you drop out of a uc after a year and then go to a ccc, can you transfer back to the same uc? is it difficult and is it 2 years like the rest of us at a ccc? and are you allowed to tag as well?

sorry for all the questions. i don't have more information because i'm trying to help out a friend. i'll be talking to a counselor too but sometimes they're not too helpful so i thought i'd try it out here as well. the search has been a bit confusing. thanks!

I’m an expert on this particular subject ;)

If you went to a UC, earned more than 30 quarter units and then dropped out, you’re in a tough spot. Even if you go back to a CC, you’ll still be considered a UC-to-UC transfer when you try to transfer to a new UC. That puts you behind HS admits and CC transfers in the admit line; UC-to-UC transfers have a really tough time getting in. Also, you wouldn’t be eligible for TAG.

Now if you go to a UC and earn less than 30 quarter units, you can transfer back to a CC and re-establish yourself as a CC student by taking only one CC unit (doesn’t even have to be UC-transferable.) and you’ll be eligible for TAG.

If you are trying to get back into the same UC you stopped attending from, then go talk to your UC’s registrar and your major advisors. You may qualify for readmission by filling out the readmission application (not the same application to be filed in November).

You may be placed under a performance contract and any official transcripts from any other universities and colleges that you have attended during the leave period must be reported.

smallpotato is correct. You are looking at readmission, not transfer. If your friend left the UC voluntarily (not due to academic dismissal), s/he may not be “required” to do an academic contract. However, it would be prudent for your friend to contact his/her academic advising unit at the UC to get some guidance on the courses s/he should take.

Your friend can file readmission any time and s/he is not restricted to any particular time frame (fall, winter, spring, or having to stay at community college for a certain length of time). Deadlines for readmission are different from regular application deadlines. The deadlines and forms can be obtained from the registrar’s office.

thanks for the replies!

i’m not too sure about how many units she has, but i do know she was dismissed (she was on probation and her gpa fell below 2.0) after a year. hopefully she can readmit since that’s probably easier than transferring. i was looking at the uci registrar website and it says…

You must apply for readmission if you are a student who wishes to return to UCI after:

•withdrawing from a quarter of enrollment; or
•a period of absence of one or more quarters; or
•the loss of student status by not paying fees or not enrolling in classes by the end of the third week of instruction.

it doesn’t mention academic dismissal so i was wondering if she is eligible or not. i heard if she meets with a counselor, they might be able to figure something out where she can go to cc, do well for a year (or two?) and then be readmitted. or is that a bit unrealistic considering she didn’t do well?

*she’s definitely going to go to uci to figure everything out. but we’re like 2 hours away and she has to wait until later this week so we’re trying to figure some stuff out on our own

I doubt they’ll readmit her if it was for academic reasons, but you’d really have to talk to UCI.

If she has to reapply, it’s going to be very tough to get in.

yeah that’s what i was thinking…

hopefully she doesn’t have too many credits so she can go to a ccc and tag later. sorry, this might be a really stupid question, but if you fail a class, does that mean you don’t get units for it? because i know she failed several classes and i’m wondering if that will count towards her unit count.

You don’t get credit for failing classes.

If she has over 30 quarter units from a UC, she can’t do TAG.

She will need to go through readmission even if she was dismissed. There is usually not a whole lot of written information on readmission after academic dismissal. She will need to talk to a few advisors to find out who knows about getting her set up for an academic contract.

I forgot to say thank you so thank you guys!

Why would you wanna do that? U’ll still have same gpa

SO tell me, Has your friend or yourself done this? It would be very generous for you to send me an email telling me how this worked out for you. And if you were happy you made this move. I am in the same position as you now, I am still unsure though.
