I'm planning on transferring to UT, so I'm at another college right now. Just curious, what happens if I were to drop a class from my current school? I know that it counts as a "W", but does it affect your transfer GPA?

For example, if I wasn't going to make an A in a class should I drop it and get the "W" instead? I don't think it affects the GPA at my current school but will it hurt my transfer GPA? For some reason I remember reading that it counts as an F for when you transfer, is this true?

It doesn’t count towards your gpa… but if you’re going to make an A, why on earth would you withdrawal?

My personal opinion is that the admission department will look at a W as a class you were going to get a D/F in, but didn’t want it to hurt your gpa, so you took a W.

I guess it’s better to have a W than a drastic drop in gpa because of a D/F… but that’s also something you have to decide for yourself. Also, you might want to look into alternative options other than a straight withdrawal. UT has a “Q” drop that students are allowed to use a few times during their schooling. Look into your school’s policies and see if there is anything that could be better than a W.
