Hi guys! I'm a junior in high school and AP Comp Sci is killing me right now. No matter how much I study, I can't seem to succeed (pretty much everyone I know can attest to this). My counselor told me if I drop the class, it won't affect my GPA (which is a 3.95 UW, 4.7 W) but it will show up on my transcript as withdrawn and colleges will see my final grade (a B- I know it's stupid to cry over, but I don't think I can handle the class for another semester).

I did try some practice AP exams and they were very easy for me, so I'm considering dropping the class but still taking the AP exam. What do you think selective colleges will think if I drop the class with a B but still get a 5 on the exam? If it helps, computer science/engineering is NOT my intended college major.

It would be different if you we’re getting like a F or D, but with a B it may just seem like laziness to colleges. If you truly can’t take the course and worry about getting a grade lower than a B than yes drop it. But definitely take the AP Exam! Good luck

If you hate the class and will still have an impressive schedule without it, then I would drop. I’m dropping AP Music Theory (my final grade was an A) after this semester because I was forced into the class and hate it. You need to e-mail your colleges and tell them of the change, however :).

Thanks you guys! I’m also considering taking the class online next semester (at my school we can take 2 semesters of a class in one semester online) if I drop it so I don’t seem lazy to colleges. I understand the subject matter, but the class at my school is very difficult. Any thoughts?

Definitely drop it and replace it with something that’s also rigorous, but where you can achieve a good grade. Pandemic’s comment about emailing your colleges would apply if you were a senior, but as a junior that’s not a concern for you.
