Dropping A Class because of a B?

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I'm considering dropping AP Literature. I got a 'B' in the class; we don't have grades in the class, he just kind of haphazardly grades us on how he sees fit. My GPA is already suffering from my other classes (B in AP Chem, A- in AP Calc and A- in AP Bio) and I would normally say I should struggle through it as it's only the first quarter, but I don't know how to improve in the class! I know I can get through AP Chem, Calc and Bio and lift it up second semester--but a B is hard to bring up to an A....

Do you guys think its unreasonable to drop the class because of a B? I've never gotten B's before---until this year. I started off shaky but my grades drastically improved in Chem, so I'm positive next quarter will be great (definitely A, averaged out, hopefully to at least an A-) but I don't want another B in Lit-which is basically a pretty much a subjective class.

Yes it is unreasonable AP classes are accepted as college credit so they should have a college type grade attached to them. B’s are not a punishment and if you drop it as a collge admissions officer if I saw that on a transcript I would read it as a D or an F.

Dropping a class this year shows up as a F on your transcript (to my knowledge).

A B is not bad. Besides, don’t most schools require you to take an English course each year?

I think we give out ‘W’ so it just shows it was dropped. I can drop down to the regular English level…

I have one more quarter to bring up all my grades for my midyear report. I’m just concerned this will destroy any chances I have of getting into the schools I want to go to which are Northwestern, Vandy, WashU and Georgetown?

I applied ED to Penn but they won’t see these grades…

LOL. don’t drop it… a B in an AP course is weighted nicely, it counts as 4 points towards your gpa. the b and two other as average out to you getting a 3.7 or so. just work to doing better next quarter or semester. colleges only look at semester grades, if you get a B this quarter and A next quarter, you’ll get a semester A. don’t worry about it.

Why don’t you talk to your teacher to see how he came to a B? The entire year is not lost because of a B first quarter. If you’re a junior, then you have the whole year to up the average. And, as pointed out, a B in AP is really worth more than a B.

Giving up after one quarter in an AP class because of a B is not a great characteristic.

IMO (please don’t be offended), I think you need some perspective. I hope you are having some fun in HS too.

I second talking to the teacher. That seems like the most logical choice to me.
