I've been contemplating dropping my spanish class. I took it for one semester and now I'm really starting to hate it. It's not a lot of work, but it's time consuming to physically sit in class. It's Spanish Conversation, which is all we have left after AP Spanish, which I took last year. I got a 5 on the exam and I've been getting A-range grades in the class, but right I'm not learning anything.

Without the class, I would still have a full schedule (6 classes) and I plan to take 3 APs. I also plan to take spanish in college so it's not like I don't care about the language. I just realized that I am more stressed now than first semester because my other classes are getting harder.

My question is, am I even allowed to do this? I told colleges I was taking the class and I haven't gotten in anywhere yet. Will it be very frowned upon? Do I have to write and tell each college? Has anyone ever done this...?

I was going to take a semester of western civ since I missed out on it as a transfer student, but as 2nd semester rolled around I just thought it would be a waste of time to take half of a class with a bunch of sophomores.... I guess I just assumed that they won't care that much. So does anyone know if I was supposed to inform them of the change?

But I can't drop it then. I have a two week window at the beginning of second semester to drop this class. After that, there's nothing I can do.

Another thing is that a lot of people dropped it and now my class is SO boring.
I wonder if colleges know how serious the class is (it's not...it's a joke) since the schools I'm applying to are familiar with my school.

The thing I worry about, besides my mental health lol, is if I can maintain my grades in my other classes. Wouldn't doing well in my other courses be better than keeping this and doing worse overall?

They'll only know about your performance in other classes AFTER they've made the decision. They'll know about the drop beforehand if you drop now.

I would talk to the GC about it...if she thinks it would be no problem, then no big deal. But I still think it can't be good (no matter how easy the class is) for colleges to have only a "dropped class" in an update.

edit: I think it's probably a bit different, yes...but you probably still have to notify them/talk to your GC since your transcript won't have the class listed.

Well my school hasn't sent in my midyear yet so I guess they can include it then... it's just that originally I had signed up for 6 classes and then added one, so it's not like I would have less than what's acceptable. But of course, you're right. I was planning to talk to my gc but she scares me and talking about colleges makes me cry. =/

lilian, if the colleges never knew of your intention to take a class in the first place, you don't have to tell them anything.

zant - IMHO, this would not be the best time to be dropping classes. The adcoms haven't even started deciding on your application, and since the midyear report will have to be sent, your dropping a class could become an issue. I would just wait it out. As enco. said, you only have 10% of the way to go.

well we had to say what classes we were planning on taking during the application so I put that in.....ahh is turning out to be a pain..... see my counselor advised me to not sign up for it last year, and when I went in to say that I'm not sure if I want to do that anymore I got this "I told you so", so I really don't want to bring it up again :(

There, there. It'll all be over just now, don't panic zant. you're 90% of the way (that's like an A). The end of the year and summer is going to be great!

I say keep it, personally, for the sake of finishing what you start. However, a girl at my school dropped AP Chem half-way through her junior year. She's currently on a full merit scholarship at Duke. I think thinks went ok for her. Ha ha.

zant - 1) they wouldnt know unless u told them or ur school did
2) they dont get secon semester grades
3) i doubt they really care all that much i dropped statistics AP and told them and they didnt care at all =D

The college that you decide to go to does see your second semester grades but I doubt they'd revoke acceptance if I had one less class.

Unlike you though Shrek, I'm not in college yet! lol

My midyear reports haven't gone out yet (we haven't gotten 1st semester grades yet) Plus, my school is so small my gc would definitely know if I dropped something.

Looks like I'm toughing it out for that 10% gah
