Hello, I’m a senior guy wating for school results
Currently, I am taking:
English 4
AP Cal BC
APUSH
AP Bio
AP Chem
AP Stat
Spanish 3
Right now, I am considering to drop my AP Bio class. Not that I am performing super bad at it (but not that good either), but I have always wanted to be a TA before I graduate high school. I am a philosophy major, so my major is not that related to Chemistry. I already took AP Physics and is taking AP chem, and have enough science credits to graduate. I was wondering how much I would be jeopardizing my chances for acceptance to universities, if at all.
Also, is it possible to notify the colleges after the acceptance?
Please do not tell me to go to my counselor. He said he’s not sure. I’ve also tried asking the colleges, but all of them are giving very vague answers.
Keep Chem and forget the TA idea. If you drop the class you would have to notify every college you applied to. Do you really want dropping AP Chem to be the college’s last impression of you before admissions decisions are made? (PS and don’t drop the class after you get an acceptance because it could be grounds for a college to rescind your offer of admission).
I don’t think you’ll be severely hurting your chances (but I don’t know which colleges you have applied to). As long as you are still meeting the entrance requirements for the college, it should be fine. I also think it would help if you explained a reason other than wanting to be a TA (it really just sounds like you are slacking off). Since your intention is to be a philosophy major, it makes sense to drop AP Bio and you should explain that to the colleges.
I think most colleges expect that you will notify them of course changes very soon after they happen, even if that means before getting an acceptance. If you wait until later, you may get rescinded.
The above posters are correct…that you will have to notify the colleges that you have dropped a class.
What would you be TAing in?
I think the key thing is what colleges are you applying to? If you told me Ivys, then I would say do not drop them.
If you are applying to state flagships, then it shouldn’t be an issue.
My D got into her #1 choice ED1 in December of her senior year. Second semester she wanted to drop AP Psych. It was her last class of the day and she wanted to be able to get an after school job. She also knew she already had more AP scores than her highly selective school would give credit for. I insisted that she email the college rep for her ED1 college. The rep responded and said we expect you to finish and get good grades in all the classes you have in process when you apply. So she did. Side note: she’s declared an Econ major and plans to take a class called Behavioral Economics in the Fall of sophomore year. The 5 she got in AP Psych satisfies one of the class prerequisites. So the class benefited her even though she didn’t get credit toward graduation for it.
