I am currently enrolled in AP Spanish Literature and the class is extremely difficult. I am struggling and simply should not have taken this class. How bad does it look to drop the class before the semester? This class is currently taking up way too much time for how poorly I am doing. If I were to stay in it I would probably get a C (keep in mind my GPA is a 4.04 10-12) and it may even hinder my ability to succeed in my other two classes that day, AP Economics and AP Calculus AB. High School soccer also just started and takes up a lot of time. I am fine with switching into another elective such as photography (an elective available the same period as my Spanish class) and would also take Spanish Pro Com. Help please! The deadline to decide is tomorrow. Thanks.

I think your decision needs to be made with your guidance counselor’s help, by tomorrow (grin). My D is also in AP Span Lit and it is absolutely the most difficult of any AP classes she has ever taken. My questions would be: a) has your GC sent out any mid-year transcripts yet; b) will your transcript show that you dropped the class at this late date (we are 1/3 of the way through your school year); c) if you begin a new elective such as photography, does your school offer it as a trimester class? Or would simply have one less class for the first semester and then photograph would start for the second semester? d) how many academic classes will you still have if you drop AP Span Lit? I am assuming that you have already taken AP Span as a junior so not having a 4th year continuous language is OK for most colleges but some highly selective LAC/Ivys do “recommend”/“require” 4 years of foreign language, so you need to check each of your possible colleges.

a) I do not believe he has sent out anything official as I have to request for him to do so. Having said that, I have already sent transcripts to Cal Poly, SDSU and University of Minnesota Twin Cities and I know it won’t look great to have dropped a class.
b) It will for the aforementioned schools but the others no.
c) On my college apps I would simply say that whatever class I am taking is “in progress.” I am leaning towards taking ProComm as it is more relevant to what I want to major in.
d) I am still in AP Econ, AP English, AP Calc and an elective called senior seminar. AP Econ ends at the semester and I will then be taking AP American Gov’t.
Thanks again. I am definitely talking to my GC tomorrow.
