I am in grade 10 taking two grade 11 courses second semester, functions and biology. I really dislike my functions teacher and I am performing really terribly compared to how I would like. I’m only about a month in and I’m considering dropping it. Is this a bad idea? Will it look bad on a transcript if this is the only class I ever drop? How will this affect my chances into competitive university programs such as medicine? Thanks in advance.
Last semester my brother was taking Civil Engineering. Long story short, he despised the class, he was under a lot of stress and I would often notice he would be up pretty late working on stuff for that class. He had pretty good grades but that class was just a blemish on his grades. And by blemish I mean a big ugly mark.
He dropped it at the beginning of this semester and has been much happier. He took Statistics, which is only one semester, and he likes it much more.
You’ve got to decide what you think will look worse, a class dropped after one month, or a noticeably lower grade among good grades. If you think you can overcome this class and work hard enough to do well, keep going. But if this class is really as bad as you say, I believe it’s better to just drop it. A low enough grade in this class will hurt your GPA which WILL hurt your chances at a competitive program. I don’t know how a dropped class affects GPA since different schools have different policies. Talk with your counselor if possible to see how it will hurt or help you.
