I'm in four AP classes, and my first semester is finally over. However, I'm taking an unecessary class, Ceramics, which I took to avoid the stigma of a free period. Would UCs, USC, Stanford, Duke, etc. care if I were to drop it at second semester and take a free period. At least care enough to drop me?

no.....I think you'd be fine. (But hey---maybe you could get all your family's birthday gifts done in that class!!!)

would it be necessary for me to inform the admissions offices?

i dont think so, its probably not related to your major and its not an AP class, so i doubt its a big deal

I was admitted ED to my school, and didn't think it would be a big deal if I dropped an Independent study in latin for a law & ethics class (which i considered to be the same caliber). I emailed just to be sure, and discovered that they were only going to allow me because of extenuating circumstances (the independent study mentor wasn't going to be able to do it).

This may be different since you don't have any current admittances (I'm completely assuming this), but I would definitely email the schools to double check. You may be surprised.

My daughter's GC thought she was required to inform colleges about dropping an elective (GC even FAXed notes herself). And this is with a heavier workload - 6 APs (one with a lab) and 9 classes altogether.

You should let them know that you're dropping a class. It's not a big deal anyway, but it shows that you're not hiding anything from them.
