dropping a class

I'm taking a summer class and I'm seriously considering dropping it. There are a lot of assignments due every week and I'm worried because I am going to be out of the country for one of those weeks. I just don't know how I'm going to be able to do 2 weeks of work in one week before my vacation. I just took a quiz and I got a 65% on it. I don't feel comfortable about how I'm going to do in this class. I also need time to prepare for moving to a new school and reviewing for a class (I took part 1 a year ago and now I'm taking part 2 this fall) and right now, I have no time to.

Should I drop it and get a "W" and retake it later or should I just stay in it and deal with all the stress and risk the bad grade (hopefully the many assignments will raise my grade, but I don't feel like the odds are in my favor)?

drop it.. even if you retake it you will still have the bad grade on your transcript

It is really not a good idea to take a class if you're not planning on being in town every single day the class meets.

Sometimes, of course, the need to travel arises without a lot of notice. And sometimes people can't drop classes because of the financial consequences. But if you're going to be gone for a week, it's the summer session, if it's a face-to-face class, and you can afford it I think dropping or withdrawing really is your best move.

Out of curiosity...what is the class?

It's English Comp 2 online. My comp 1 class had hardly any assignments, so I kinda assumed that it would be the same for comp 2.

I think that I may just try to stick with it for a while. Whether I withdraw now or in 6 weeks, it will still show up the same. I turned in a few more assignments and now my grade isn't so bad, so I'm not freaking out as much. I have to have this class, so I guess it's either now or later when I def don't have time to take it.

So I don't have to start a new thread, I'll ask here: My trip is at the end of June. Should I go ahead and email my professor to notify him (and ask if I will be able to have access to the quizzes/essays/DBs early) or should I wait until closer to time?

I would ask him now. The professor probably won't care one way or another, but you would know where you are standing and plan accordingly. If you ask him now, he would probably outline a plan of action (e.g. when you can take the quizzes, write the essays etc) and ask you to remind him about this arrangement at a later point in time, or he might tell you up-front that he is not willing to make extra arrangements for you so that you can go on vacation during class time.

Missing a week of a summer class is like missing a month of a regular class. I suppose it can be done, but I assume most profs would be pretty hesitant to let a student do that. Definitely talk to the professor now and see what his/her advice is. They may think it's doable but they may not. If you're committed to completing the course, you might want to wait a week to have this conversation to see if you can bring your grade up. If you're doing decently and proving yourself to be a hard worker, they might be accommodating.

Is it really that bad if it is an online class?

I don't have to listen to lectures or anything. All I have to do is turn some things in. The only thing that I don't already have access to is the quiz due that week, which I suppose I could do on Sunday (it's due by 11:59pm and I will be getting home about 3 hours before that). The rest of the things I suppose I could turn in early. If that is the case, should I even tell him about my trip?
