Dropping a class

I know, this thread is done frequently, but every situation is different, so Imma gonna go ahead anyway. It might get lengthy, so sorry. :B

I'm taking Calc 2. I don't need it for my major, for breadth requirements, nothing; I'm just taking it because I like math. Apparently I'm not that great at math anymore, though.

It's a 5 credit class, so it factors relatively heavily in to my GPA, for now at least. The exams make up almost all of the grade, and I got a C on the first one, and it's not curved. At the rate I'm going, I'm probably not going to pull that out of the second one, especially since the professor even said that most people do worse on the second, third, and final ones. The second exam is before the drop deadline, so if I stay until then I could take it, but I won't get it back graded before the deadline. So I'll just have to gauge how good or bad I think I did on it, and go from there.

If I drop it, I'm still full time, and I get a DR on my transcript, but apparently that's okay. Is it? I dunno... it just feels like quitting and giving up, and I really don't like to do those things! I don't like to get a D, either, which it kinda looks like I might. I've talked to students who've taken it, and they say if you're not going to get from a BC to an A and you don't have to have it, just drop it because it isn't worth it. On the other hand, I don't want to regret dropping it, if say, I switch my major (because I'm not 100% decided) and end up needed it. That's not really likely though.

So should I drop? It doesn't look that bad to drop a 5 credit class and get a DR your freshman year, right? It's a class that takes up a lot of time, and I am not getting the results I want from it.

Another thing: This class is the most dropped class on campus. I guess I wouldn't feel so bad dropping it, but... =</p>

Haha, Calc II sucks so much. Drop it.

Well either feel like a quitter or a stubborn person with a C on their transcript. You could excuse the DR with various excuses in the future, you can't excuse a C... it's just what it is.

And you don't want to start off your freshman GPA with a 2.0-3.0 because it's your easier years. You want to start off with a strong GPA so it'll make up for your later years.

Drop it and decide whether it's best to take it later or forget about it. This may help you narrow down on a major.

uyulove, I like the way you put that; it makes a lot of sense.

I'm doing okay in my other classes. A in one, AB in another, B in another, so I'm pretty sure I could pull above a 3.0 total, even with a C in math. However, I'd only have 12 credits after dropping, 1 of them band, so... I dunno. I would feel pretty slackerish, since it's only three classes (four with band), but I think I could start to do even better in them, or at least, I should start to do better.

I would feel really lazy as well, because then my first class would start at either 12:05 MWF or 1:20 TR instead of 9:55... But at least I'd be getting sleep every night, I guess. :B

Yeah, I think I'm going to drop it. I just hope I actually take the time I'll get from dropping it and do something productive with it.

if you don't want to drop it for the W on that transcript, and also don't want it to affect your gpa, you can always switch it to CR/NC.
