Dropping a non-pre-required class with a W a semester before transferring to a different school

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if dropping a class with a W the semester before transferring to a UC would affect admission, especially if the class is not required for my major?

Here are some details of my situation: I’m a student at a community college with a 3.6 GPA with a focus on visual arts/ graphic communications. I’ve applied to different schools such as UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, etc for their art/design programs and waiting for responses/acceptance letters in the coming two months. (ALL IGETC REQUIREMENTS ARE COMPLETED - 60 units, eligible GPA, and completed required/recommended courses)

Marketing is a minor (also one of my TAG majors) which at most schools require going the business route: taking higher math classes that visual arts/graphic communications majors do not need to take. This semester I am also only taking two courses: Managerial Accounting and Multivariable Calculus (9 units-semester). Multivariable calculus has been a lot more difficult than I initially assumed and I am not doing as well as I need to pass the class. Because the last day to drop with a W is quickly approaching, I wanted to know if it was ideal to drop my calculus class and if it would affect/revoke any future acceptances to universities (leaving me to only be taking only 4 units this semester).

Thanks in advance!

Also, if I should drop, should I be contacting them now to let them know? Or just wait till after acceptance?

Yes definitely contact them. You don’t wanna get rescinded for dropping a class, cuz once accepted your provisions say that you have to finish all your class with a certain GPA. If you contact them beforehand, you might get the okay to drop the class, since it’s not a prereq
