I'm applying to Ivy League and highly ranked universities. I want to know if it will hurt my chances of getting in if I drop an elective class. The class is Virtual Enterprise (it's a business class). I'm already taking ap Econ, BC calc, ap physics, college govt, and college English. If I drop the class, I will replace it will something else for second semester. I want to drop VE because I have to do a lot of pointless work for that class and I am not learning anything. I'm planning on majoring in operations research, industrial engineering, or financial engineering. For the schools that don't have that, I will major in math/ applied math and Econ. Will dropping VE 2nd Q hurt my chances? I'm doing well in VE (high 90s average) but I really hate it. Thanks!

If you replace it with a class, it shouldn’t look like you’re slacking. You’ll need to email the schools you are applying to about the change (or mail/fax, in some cases). If you are are worried, you can also have your guidance counselor mitigate the change by explaining the cnahge in your mid-year report, exactly like how you were talking about with VE.

I agree that it should not affect your admissions decisions at all, so long as you replace it with a class of equal or greater rigor. If you or your GC contacts schools about it, consider that contact opportunity as an opening to also provide any other positive updates you might be able to add at this point.

You don’t have to replace it with another class. If you are working more hours on your EC or to raise money to pay for college or to help with a family obligation, that’s fine to. They aren’t going to care about an elective. D had only 5 classes her senior year (done for the day by noon) because her EC was demanding. None of the highly selective schools she applied to cared.
