One of my friends told me today that UC's wouldn't care if I dropped a class I am taking right now, as long as it's not for my 60 units or a prereq.

The class is intro to linear algebra and diff equations, and I got accepted to UCSB, pending for UCSD for Bus Econ/Econ.

Anyone know if this is true? I am taking 18 units right now and if I could drop this class it would be great. I originally only took this class because UCI needs it as a prereq, and now I am no longer planning to go there.

call the school and ask. anything that differs from your planned courses from the winter update needs to be reported to the school. if it’s not a prereq and you’ll still complete your units they should let you drop it though

dude, ucsd doesn’t offer a biz econ major. within econ dept is management of science, econ, and a join math-econ major.

and taking random classes related to biz @ rady school of management doesn’t give you a diploma of biz econ. and there is not a business minor. sure they offer accounting but it’s not a ‘business’ minor.

Hey, I have a similar question. Will UCSD or Davis care that I’m dropping the Honors portion of a class I’m taking? I’ll still be taking the regular class, just dropping the Honors credit. It’s not a requirement class.

As far as I know, you need to notify the school you decide to attend, either by phone or letter. This is regarding any changes made to your spring coursework that ended up being different than the app update you submitted during January.

they might care about that class man. Linear algebra IS REQUIRED for your major.

it is at UCI and UCSD at least. It’s not a VITAL prereq, but you’ll have to take it eventually.

EDIT: wait wat? could’ve sworn I’d seen somewhere that UCSD needed 3 semesters of calc… assist.org isn’t showing it

that said I dropped one class just fine… then again public speaking was CSU, but not UC transferable so ehh…

EDIT: looks like it isn’t…

seriously, WOW. I could have gotten into UCSD or UCSB so freaking easy if i never had to take calculus 2
WOW. just wow. this kills me on the inside, I had to take calc2/honors calc1+2 5 times in total. it cost me years of my life. LITERALLY. I could’ve TAGed into UCSD Econ so easy and I’d have had a higehr GPA to boot, sure i’d have had to have taken on a load or two but 2 years of work would’ve paid them off… hgjfdgkjsdfklgjdfs
I FEEL SO STUPID.

fdgsdfgfdsg

/frustration.

FYI management science at UCSD requires linear algebra. MS is what you want if you’re looking to be one of those numbers guys who makes big $$$$ at some firm.

@xelink it’s a horrible idea to take multi-variable calculus/linear algrebra in C.C for UCI

If you look at the class it makes up for you need to take 8 semester units to make up for a 4 quarter unit Math for economist class which makes no sense at all.

it’s not needed at all for business economics so if your done early with calc 1/2 you have the option to do calc 3 and linear algebra but
<a href=“EEE+ Home | UCI”>EEE+ Home | UCI;

judging by that class description they tend to focus these math classes to be much more relevant to what you need to know. Rather than having alot of topics in calc 3/linear algebra that related more to physics/geometry/etc

Yea, that was my reaction too. I initially took it just for UCI, but now that I decided on going to UCSB, Bus Econ, or UCSD, Econ, I am not gunna need the class. I called UCSD and my counselor was correct, since it isn’t needed for my 60 units or a prereq, it wont effect me if I drop the class. The weird thing was they even said I didn’t need to notify them because they will see it when I send in transcripts, of course I am gunna shoot them an email anyway just in case.

@peter86.
Econ105A requires BOTH math3a and 4 as prereqs. If I took Math235 linear algebra, it would’ve been 4 semester units for a 4 quarter unit course and it would’ve included some of math3a in it as review. It also would have cost $100 vs. $1100. It’s different at my CC than yours apparently

if I don’t take both Math 3a AND 4 this summer, I can’t take 105ABC until my senior year. if I don’t take the 105 series, I will have to take an extra year so I can finish off two course in the 123 series which require 105 to be done.

assuming I don’t get special permission to take 105A with only one of the two math prereqs done, ehh, I’ll see.

FYI, it’s only Biz-Econ and regular Econ which only requires Linear Algebra. Quantitative Economics might as well be call Econ-Stats-Calculus ■■■■■■■-Child
