Dropping AP Calculus

I got in to W&M back in November through Early Decision. My first-semester grades were pretty much all A's, with the exception of a C in Calc--my GC said it more than likely would not be an issue with the college.

Got my progress report back today, and I'm flunking the class. I've elected not to take the exam--I don't feel like I'm going to get a 4 or a 5, and I have 5 other exams to study for anyway.

I seriously don't feel like I have much of a shot at pulling it back up, and I'm planning on going into the GC office tomorrow and asking to drop the class. How is this going to affect admission? What looks worse, staying on and winding up with a D for the year, or dropping it and getting straight a's?

Which calculus class are you taking? AB or BC? If you’re in BC, you should try AB. Otherwise, you should try to stick with BC, even if you end up with a bad grade. Your transcript at the end of the year would say something like incomplete or dropped if you choose not to continue with the class. Personally, I’d rather not give them the message that I gave up on something. If calculus is the only class with a poor grade, it shouldn’t affect your admission much.

Have you considered a tutor? Talk to the chair of the math department…he/she might offer tutoring services or perhaps one of the other math teachers. Not only will you get help with the material, the fact that you are trying will show them you want to succeed. Try to hang in there.

I would talk to your teacher and try to work on a plan that will get you a ‘C’.

If you don’t come in with math credits, you will have to take a math class at W&M for GER. Of course, you can take “math of powered flight” if you want.

I agree with soccerguy…my point is don’t feel that you are alone in this. If you and your teacher work out a plan, you won’t feel so helpless. Once you have the plan, TALK to him/her a lot about the material and any questions you have. As I said in my previous post, a tutor can really help also (speaking from personal experience).

I know it seems tough right now, but my advice is stick with it. W&M will look much more favorably on a C with a story as opposed to dropping the class.

Keep in mind that W&M admitted you when you were enrolled in AP Calculus. If you are considering dropping a course we recommend you contact your regional dean to discuss the reasons for so doing. W&M never recommends dropping an academic course or getting a failing grades and your regional dean can discuss how the Committee would view your various scenarios.
