“Butterfly” are butterfly needles. They are very thin, so hurt a lot less. Also, if you tell them he’s or she’s a fainter they will get the better phlebotomist in there. (Yeah, I get a lot of blood draws, and used to faint.)

Thanks for thoughts on drug use and alcohol…we know where he is and who he is with 24/7…he will not even take a tylenol for a headache…no chance he would use an illegal substance— he doesn’t even drink coffee for the impact it has on you- and he actually has commented on jerks who risk being rescinded for a displinary action such as this…i’m telling you- -he’s a nerd, but a jackass too. This is in fact why he wants to get out of the high school…75% party and drink…he’s never ever even been to a party-- and he gets invited all the time…he and his nerdy friends are the last guys on the planet to date, drink or party-- sadly… they play b-ball, online gaming and other techie-geekie things…

The needle thing…when he had to have the blood drawn after the incident that prompted the emergency and then the surprise diagnosis…his arms were so puffy from being overweight that it took the “vein machine”, hot wraps and multiple tries to find a vein…he has been spooked since that experience…it was awful! (He gained 30 pounds last year-- we saw him getting bigger and were concerned …he said it was “puberty fat”…obviously you don’t push on weight b/c you don’t want to create emotional issues like anorexia…so we sat quietly and took junk food out the house, and encouraged more sports…to his credit – at the end of 8th grade he did have a career ending football injury and that is when all the weight gain started…eventually leading to the diabetes diagnosis this fall)

Like I said, he would have to be bound and gagged to get the blood drawn…
we almost got him there in March…spoke to the lab head at the local hospital-- they had their best guy all set for his fasting blood draw on a weekend morning…got in the car…and boom, he ran back in the house - -ate some food and said…nope, not happening… as you can all see, parts of this kid are just one big baby, other part jerk, one part jack-ass, one part genius, one part depressed…list goes on…
He needs help…

Just hope he takes his final on Monday…one small step at a time…then the Calc AP the next week…

How much weight did he gain, from 8th grade till late 09, and how much does he weigh now ? How tall is he ?
