Dropping classes for second semester.

My high school is doing something I think is great.

They are enabling seniors taking 4 Aps+ to drop other classes not needed for graduation. I am currently taking VHS Biology and i really hate that class so I really want to drop it. Also I have the option of dropping chemistry and U.S History. And so if i drop all these classes I will remain with the following schedule:

Ap U.S Gov

English 12
Ap Calc AB (Self Studying BC)

AP Research
AP Spanish
3D Design thinking

However I was wondering, would the UC schools or other schools such as Northeastern, UMiami, University of Michigan etc… have a problem with me dropping 3 non- AP classes? What if i just drop VHS Biology?

For the UC schools I applied for business/Management Science/Economics

Other schools I applied for Industrial Engineering.

Update: I just want to drop one non-AP class, VHS Biology, and a withdrawn might appear on my transcript.

Yes, you need to inform them of a schedule change.

@HRSMom I will of course, my only worry is that this might affect my chances of admission?
What if I tell them that I am planning on self-studying calc BC as I have not listed that on my application because I was not planning on doing so before.

What Does your GC think? I think it might be seen as “lightening your load” unless you show something in its place. You might be better off just sticking with it.

@HRSMom I cannot take anything in its place. Its an online course, so if I drop it, I will still be left with 8 classes which is the maximum amount of classes that can be offered per semester at my school. In addition to that, I will be doing an AP independent study so I do not know what more they can ask for.

I would just call and ask. Once you explain it, they may say “not a problem”. 8 is a lot of classes!

Boy I"d love to know what high school this is. The offer to (I’d go so far as to suggest the enticement to) drop other classes is pretty awful on the part of your high school. Stinky I’d say. They are playing the ratings game. They want the school’s AP scores to look as high possible and if that comes at the expense of the education of their students, too bad! See they don’t have to make public the final grades for their regular classes. But that is amazingly anti-intellectual and sickening. They should be encouraging students to take courses outside their comfort zone. Senior year is an ideal time to do that since, as you’ve noted, there is slightly less pressure to nab certain grades. Now someone is bound to suggest that they are trying to give the seniors a break while also ensuring that they get college credit for their APs. And if you believe that I have a bridge you might be interested in buying. They want to rise or maintain their rank on US New’s other list! Sickening!
