Hi everyone. I am currently in my sophomore year and taking Trigonometry Honors. All year I have received low Bs and Cs and my guidance counselor recommends that I drop down to Precalc next year and not take Precalc/AP Calc. Will my low B average for the year and my dropping down to Precalc greatly affect my chances of getting into Cornell University? I have a rigorous course load/ As in all of my other classes. My extracurriculars are out of this world and I have amazing volunteer hours. HELP! should I drop down? Will my grade/dropping down effect me a lot? thanks :)

Yes it’ll definitely hurt. You say your EC’s are out of this world, what are they? If they’re truly amazing, you MIGHT get lucky.
Do post your EC’s.

a lot of schools use interviews for this reason. If you go into an interview and explain that you wanted to challenge yourself but math was just not your strong subject then this will help you. or write about it in your essay. If the rest of your grades are great and you have good test scores, you will still have a shot.

The most selective colleges don’t need to admit kids with amazing ECs and average classes & grades. They are academic institutions, first and foremost. The ECs are the tipping factor the top colleges use to select between talented kids; many top schools say they could have built another great class or two out of the kids they turned down. So unless your EC is US Olympic Team hockey or some other athletic endeavor Cornell cares about, falling behind the curve academically is going to hurt.

Math & science requires a different approach to learning than liberal-arts classes like history or english. I suggest you spend some time this summer learning about how to study better for subjects like these.
