Dropping Foreign Language to Pick Up on Senior Year

Hello,

I'm currently a sophomore that is taking five AP exams (3 self-studied). I am currently studying Chinese II with 98%, but due to my love for arts I have dropped Chinese III. I was wondering if I could get into Stanford (which requires three years of foreign language) if I take Chinese III on my senior year. I'll be self-studying AP Japanese for my junior year as well.

My schedules are:
Freshman: ...Chinese I... (omitted)
Sophomore: AP WH, AP Bio, English II, Precalc, Chinese II, PE/Health (+ AP Psych, Micro, Macro)
Junior: AP Calc BC, AP Physics C (EM+M), AP US, English III, Painting I, Painting II (+ AP Japanese self-study, AP Stat)
Senior: Chinese III, AP Gov, AP Macro (forced by county), Calculus II, Calculus III, AP Lang, AP Studio, Chinese IV

Total AP: 10 (+4 self studies) --> 14

This is quite aggravating because I want to either enter CalArts or Stanford... please help!

I don’t quite understand your point in taking the two self-study AP classes in junior year. I think that methodically continuing Chinese is the better approach.

When in doubt, call the admissions office. I’m sure they will be more than happy to give you their thoughts on what they feel the most beneficial order of study would be for your foreign language credits.

For what it’s worth, I would suggest taking all three years in succession. There is usually a ‘required’ number of credits for any give subject, as well as a ‘suggested’. This can mean the difference of 3 years vs. 4 years, or as much as 3 years vs. 5 years at some universities. At others, 3 years, simply means that… 3 years.

It’s a shame, really - I find the Chinese and the Japanese language very easy to absorb due to my ethnicity (Korean) but really want to challenge myself in the arts.
