so, after senior year I will have taken 6 years of math, 5 years of english, 6 years of history, and 5 years of science - all the challenging classes i can take.

HOWEVER i only took 3 years of spanish. (8th, 9th, and 10th grade.)

my school offers spanish 4, spanish 5 (AP), and even an additional spanish 6 for students who were able to start spanish in 7th grade.

have i screwed myself over by not continuing with Spanish?

i have a really twisted schedule senior year and don't know if i can add in spanish 4 (plus, would it look strange for taking a year off?)

You can't hide info, because they will find out and wonder why you weren't upfront.

Write a note explaining why you didn't continue with FL (chose to take other, academic classes). They'll understand and will like you for being mature and honest.

I am in a similar situation, I took Spanish III and IV (highest level in CA) over summer and so I chose not to take III or IV during the school year and optioned to take Comp Sci which I took to the AP level and got a 5. I will write a note on my app explaining.

8th grade will not count, 8th grade is not on your transcript, you two is the minimum, but from what Stanford told us, most schools would liketo see three years in a foreign language than another elective, in my case...political science. Four years will push you even further and at schools like Weslyan, your application gets a star if you took 4 years.

most of us took Spanish in 8th grade but that counts for :p, so I suggest you take Spanish either this year or next year so you can rack three years under your belt.

Oh, and Stanford's response, four years and fluency of another language shows dedication to the most difficult area of study, one that cannot be taught through text books and computers. You cannot stop a language and then catch up on it, you really have to start over, so they'd rather have me take political economy and all the history classes I want in college but take care of the foreign language studies now.

it doesnt count?! then why the heck do they say it does?
will all the high school credit courses i took in 7th/8th grades not count?
it is on my transcript.

You need to check with your school and see what your official transcript will show, unless they go outright to put the middle school calsses on your high school transcript, which I doubt, then it wont matter.

I visited Stanford a couple weeks ago and the admissions officer said they will consider the LEVEL of your Spanish education. Summer school will show as well.
