Hello! I’m currently part of the UC system and I was just wondering if you know what would happen if I were to drop a class while half way through the quarter. I have 12 units, but if I were to drop the class I would be going down to 8 units. I am also taking out full loans as well (Parent Plus Loans and Unsubsidized).
You need to go over this with the FA office before you drop the class. It is probably too late to get the money back from the school for the class, but they will adjust your FA, require you to repay some of it before you can register for the next quarter.
What if I were to makeup for the units next quarter? Say i take 16 units?
.
You can’t “make up” units for financial aid purposes NEXT term.
If you drop below full time, it is very possible you will,be asked to repay aid received because it was granted onnthe basis of FULL time enrollment.
I’m not sure how this applies to unsubsidized and Plus Loans. Plus Loans are NOT student financial aid.
Talk to financial aid BEFORE you drop courses. You also want to make sure you are meet Satisfactory Academic Progress…meaning your GPA, passed courses, are a high enough %age of what you registered to take. If NOT, you quite possibly won’t be eligible for aid next term.
How much are you borrowing for this school? If you drop down to part-time, can your parents afford to pay for whatever your aid doesn’t cover?
If it is after the lock date (generally, the drop/add deadline), your federal aid should not be affected. However, because you are on a quarter system, it is possible that there may be some affect … probably not, but I can’t say for sure. Institutional aid may have different policies, though. You should always check with the financial aid office before making a decision to drop, because there may be both immediate and long-term consequences … ask about both.
