So as a senior, I’m currently taking Linear Algebra at a community college for during my second semester. I took Multivariable Calculus in the first semester this school year. I’m finding that this class (combined with the rest of my schedule) is stressing me out way too much. Currently, I’m juggling the work for this class with an online AP Physics C (E&M, which is new to me) course, capstone projects (among other projects), and stuff at home.
This course started after I submitted all of my applications, and was also not on the college transcript I sent to all of my applied universities. My CC courses are not on my school transcript either, so only colleges that required me to self-report courses (MIT, Berkeley, UCLA, UIUC) know that I am taking this course (it was also marked as not started).
If I dropped this course, I know that I would have to notify those four colleges of a change in my schedule. Are there any other downsides to dropping a college math class in my second semester, even after I’ve taken one in the first semester?
Additionally, I think that if I drop this course, it won’t show up in my final CC transcript that I would send to the college I will attend.
Edit: I think I waited send my transcript to register for this course so it is on my CC transcript that I sent to all my colleges, so I would have to update all of my universities.
Dropping is when you drop a course in the first couple of weeks of school. it does not show up on your transcript.
Withdrawing is when you withdraw from a course…you usually can do it up until about 2/3 the way through the semester. It is shown as a “W” on your transcript.
If you do withdraw, then make sure you do it correctly. Don’t just stop going (you will get an F).
Talk to your GC…Linear Algebra is usually taken either second semester Sophomore year or after that.
You have taken a math class this year…just all in one semester.
I would make sure to notify colleges.
I don’t know how much math all the other MIT/Berkeley type applicants have taken but I would imagine you would be okay because that is very advanced.
I’ll talk to my GC about withdrawing and whether or not I should/other details. I don’t think I’ll do anything of that sort too soon, as I’ve only had a few classes. So I’ll see how I am doing later on, especially since I have time to drop (I checked my CC’s site and it was almost near the end of the semester).
I’ll ask one of my friends who is going to MIT now (graduated last year) about what he did, since he took these courses as well and kinda withdrew (not sure if he formally did or just stopped showing up).
