I've taken four years of my foreign language prior to senior year so I meet the admission requirements for my colleges, but I'm planning on dropping my AP foreign language. I haven't been improving and I can't dedicate enough time to that class as I'm taking 5 other APs. The problem is that I've already applied to most of my colleges so that AP class is on my Common App and will be on my transcript for first quarter. If I drop the class second quarter would that severely hamper my chances of getting into the colleges I already applied to?

Need more info. Which language ? What do you plan to do for a career ?

The language I am taking is French and my career path is mainly oriented around psychology or medicine. Most of the colleges that I have applied to already that have asked what majors I would major in I put down psychology.

Bump, I really would like advice/input on this.

French is not worth sacrificing grades in your other AP courses if you do not intend to continue studying it in college. other languages, such as Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese), Spanish, Portuguese & Middle Eastern languages are sought by employers.

Oh ok. I was planning on studying Chinese in college anyway. My main concern would be would there be any detrimental effects on my application/admissions if colleges see on my midyear/end year report that I dropped out of it after first quarter?

Some super selective universities (Ivies, for example) may expect an explanation. My best guess is that you’re not planning to apply to McGill University.

Clearly, it won’t help your applications, but it may only hurt them at the ultra-selective schools when seeking a reason to eliminate an otherwise well-qualified applicant.

Ok thanks a lot for your help!

it’s no big deal really, you can drop it unless you really want to learn it.
