Would it look bad on a college application if I dropped out my first semester senior year but returned second semester of senior year?

Compared to staying in school? Absolutely.

However, most schools have section (like the common app) for an extra information place where you could explain why. If it was not simply because you didn’t want to go to school, I’m guessing there’s a good reason and then admissions will understand (like an extremely long illness).

If they don’t, or you are unsure about a specific college, you can contact admissions. They’ll find out one way or another that you dropped out so there’s no harm starting a conversation.

Well, it isn’t going to look good, but as long as there’s a reasoning behind it, it shouldn’t really hold you back. I dropped out my sophomore year, and never returned to high school. I got a GED, and I’m now in a community college. Once I get my associates, I’ll be transferring to a university…hopefully U of I Urbana-Champaign, or Illinois Institute of Technology…or a few other schools that I’ve got in mind.

Most universities will accept people with GED’s as transfer students, provided that they have the test scores and GPA to back themselves up.

Is this something that you’ve already done, or that you’re considering doing?
