Dropping Westminster

Sometimes I feel like a hamster just spinning my wheels. We are seriously thinking of dropping Westminster from "the list". We still have 5 more visits in NOV/DEC and this one is scheduled for Jan.

It was on the list originally because it has a great lacrosse program and good academics and my son should have a really good chance of getting in with his academic record and athletics....

There are so many schools out there that the more we learn the harder it is to decide.

Any opinions about St George's verses Westminster?

If you can make the time to visit, it would be worthwhile to visit before dropping any school. You and your son may find that you don't like some of the other schools after a visit. You can also assess interest from the coaches.

It's nice to be within a 2 hour drive of a school so that you are close enough to attend games. This may seem like a small factor now, but it may become very important later.

Westminster is less than an hours drive...I was checking out the website again. Maybe we'll hold off until we visit more schools.

I'd chose st. georges because of it gorgeous campus and state of the art pool (because i'm a swimmer). I'm a lacrosse player too. St. georges is not all that great at lax, but that'll give you a chance to shine. St. georges has the best looking campus around and is a great school. the beach is right down the road to hang out. I surf down in RI on the beach next to St. georges and it seems to have a friendly enviorment. Newport is one of my favorite towns. It has everything in it, plus mouth watering food.

My sis goes to st. mark's which plays in same league as St. georges. St. georges is not the best, awesome facilities though. However, most of the schools in their league is in MA, which means they have to drive at least 2 hours to every away game and maybe 4 hrs when playing against st. pauls

I go to westy and I would highly reccomend it. Aside from the phenominal academics and wonderful athletic program it is an all around good learning enviroment. Also, It is so much fun. There is a good balance between school, sports, and friends. The campus is beautiful and sometimes I don't even feel like i'm at school! I LOVE it here. I would reccomend coming to look at least.

If it were a "reach" school far away from home, I'd say you could drop it.

However, a match or a safety school, with a good reputation, less than an hour from home, at which your son's academic record and sports would increase his chances of admission? I would vote that you visit the school.

still doing visits? dude, when are you going to get the applications done? mine are nearly finished and it was for five schools. this is a ton of work. a lot more than i bargained for. the good news is that i am a much better writer from this.

Hockeykid841 might kill me for this but...

I though i really liked St. Pauls. I was all excited about it before the tour and interview. I was almost positive i was going to apply there. The tour ends and i get in the car and i think back. I did not like it. Nothing appealed to me. Maybe it was the fact that there was 6 inches of snow on the ground but the fact is I'm not applying. You really have to visit the campus to make sure before dropping it.

We just finished visits - many of my son's classmates still have them scheduled and will be doing them into January. Some applications are not due until Feb. 1st.

McskittlZ10 - We have also decided not to apply to St. Paul's. Great interview, not so great tour. But like you, it just didn't feel right.

We almost cancelled a couple of our visits (St Paul's was one) and I'm glad we didn't. We may not be applying, but at least now we know that it isn't a great fit, instead of having a nagging feeling of doubt about it.

Ashleycm1092 - great to hear from someone that actually attends Westminster. We have been hearing good things about Westminster and will be visiting in Jan.

We are still visiting schools because we got a late start and couldn't get Sat interviews. We also had to avoid game days during soccer season. My son has 3 weeks off for holiday break so he should be able to accomplish a lot.

I thought I had also postd that we are working on our applications over Chirstmas break, but somehow I don't see that post. Anyway, that's what we are doing.
