Drug and Alcohol Scene at NYU

I'm a high school junior who's highly interested in NYU and I was wondering what's the alcohol and drug scene like? Personally, I don't drink or do any kind of drugs (call me "straight edge" if you may). I know that there are drugs and alcohol at any college, there certainly are in my high school. I need to know how prevalent it is in a student's social life because I don't want to feel pressured to do that stuff (not that I'd give into it). Like would I be able to make a group of friends that don't do that stuff or at least respect the fact that I don't if they do.

D is freshman at NYU, says there is drugs and alcohol, not too visible unless you are involved. She is vehemently against it does not feel pressure and is very happy there and all fo her friends do not indulge.

No one is going to make you smoke weed or do any drugs
there is no pressure at all but i am sure you will find many who smoke

drinking is another story
alot of people drink
alot of activities revolve around drinking
but no one is going to like make you drink

there are definately people who dont drink and stuff but they are not that fun

Thanks.
I can deal with drinking (just not like in my face), it's was mainly the drugs that as my concern.

Yeah, nobody's going to force their alcohol or drugs on you. That'll be a waste, haha.

Haha. I know.
My family is already a bit iffy about me wanting to go to college in NYC, but I think I'll be fine, everyone else seems to be.

My D loves, loves, loves NYU.

My sister says yes.

Tons of parties.

Alcohol, drugs, especially drugs are everywhere. It's New York, what do you expect?

But not binge indulgence, like at other schools.

I was surprised by how much drugs, specifically weed, seem to be EVERYWHERE sometimes. I find it annoying sometimes, but mostly it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.
It's also fairly easy to find a great group of friends who don't drink or do drugs and have a great time with them.

there's certainly a chance that you'll get roommates who smoke pot in your room (especially if you're in a suite). if you want to be sure, sign up for CHOICES...but only if you're really, really sure...because some of the people there are... beyond straight edge. not that i'm making any judgements.

Well I have athsma too, so it's also a health issue. And what exactly is CHOICES?

Choices housing is basically housing for extremely religious people, religious people, straightedge people, who want a really wholesome college experience. There's supposed to be one at every college campus.

CHOICES is substance free housing.

I see. But I also see it's only offered in 2 of the freshmen residence halls.
At the moment the 3 I want in order of most wanted to least wanted are: UHall, 3rd North, or Weinstein. Only 3rd North has CHOICES out of those three.
I probably won't apply for it though and just hope for the best.

Yeah, I mean you can work out compromises with your roommates, as with everything room-related, but there is a chance you'll be around people who do use things. Hopefully you won't though! There's a chance you won't too!

yeah, I like UHall and #rd north as well. I might apply for hayden, IF I get in. (big if ;-) )

I don't know all that much about you, but I don't do any sort of drug, ever. And I very very rarely drink, to the point where I wouldn't be bothered by living "substance free" my freshman year.
However, I, personally, wouldn't consider substance free housing, just because of the type of people that option attracts. I'd rather take my chances with a random roommate and floor. ;-)

just something to think about.

I think that this year there is a very clear directive that drugs and alcohol are not tolerated, and people get written up when caught, including those who happen to be "standing next to" or "living with" the person that gets caught. Three times, you are "out". This may only be enforced in the freshman dorms, I don't know. My D knows of 2 people who got written up within the first few days of classes, and 1 who was sent home.

Although I am sure there are "creative" ways around this, there is absolutely no pressure if you don't want to join. If your roommate is a problem, the RA takes care of things immediately.

D does not take part in either, but tends to be tolerant of people who do, does now not want to 'get in trouble for nothing' however, and so she steers clear.

BTW, D said her neighbor in the next dorm room got hauled out because of alcohol. NYU does not tolerate this scene.

What my D (also a Tisch freshmen) has said echoes what Mtgrlsmom's D reports: kids have been and are written up for being at parties, in rooms, etc. where drugs and alcohol are being used. You don't have to be using yourself to be in trouble, so the smart kids "steer clear."

I honestly don't think it's a big issue finding other kids who have fun doing things that don't involve drinking and drugs. Like people tend to group together.

Hannahtastic, yeah, that's basically the reason I might not apply for CHOICES. I'll take my chances and handle any problem when it come.
