We have heard that all the top colleges believe in

"We work hard and we play hard."

Which means that most of the people live a very stressfull and
unhealthy life. What is the drug, alcohol and very unhealthy lifestyle
situation at MIT.

I have a friend who is at U Penn and is tormented with the drug situation.
She can deal with the academics but not people voimting and going nuts
daily.

um, i'd say you're exaggerating just a bit. most college students, top colleges or not, don't live particularly healthy lives. also, are you concerned with all drug use, or just the use of illegal substances?

to sortof answer your question about the situation here, some people drink. some people don't. some drink too much. same with drugs...of both sorts. it's not an essential part of your experience here, but it's a choice you might make. tho again, that's not exactly a function of being in college, but one of those things that happens in life.

Uh... if you want to live in a healthy lifestyle, you most certainly can. MIT has awesome sports facilities for working out the stress at. Dining halls have salad bar options. I certainly don't see people using drugs left and right - even the smokers I know I can count on one hand. I've heard stories about the east campus culture - supposedly Senior House has quite a number of drug users - but those are solely rumors from when I was there for CPW two years ago.

I also have some friends at Harvard who use marijuana once in awhile (like, maybe twice a month). It's not really a big deal - they're not addicted, they don't push it onto other people, it doesn't affect their work or social life, and I've certainly never seen them get sick from it.

I personally have not touched alcohol, cigarettes, or any other type of drugs since coming to MIT, even though I drink at home with my parents. It's all how you want to take it. I don't see much peer pressure from anyone - you do it if you want, but no one's going to make you.

oh yeah, i guess i maybe didn't point that out properly. yes, the athletic facilities are quite nice...for healthy eating i prefer to cook for myself, as do most of my friends (especially the vegetarians) but that's also a matter of convenience.
