Hello. May I start by presenting all of the fine aspects of the student I am??? I am a junior at 15 as I did skip a grade. I am the editor in chief of the yearbook, a flutist in the band, a member of CSF, and member of a "rigorous" AP track at my school. I am ranked number 6 out of 544 students, mainly because I just couldn't get my act together to turn a B+ into at least an A- (3.9 non-weighted GPA, 4.7 weighted GPA). I do a good part of volunteering, mainly in my church band and at a museum, sometimes the library. I used to be in National Honor Society, but, as I regret, I was dismissed. This happened because of some MAJOR stupidity on my part: A close friend offered me and some other friends parts of a pot brownie during a school-related activity. I was just curious and I consented. It was my first time, and I didn't know what to expect, so I really freaked out and was having an episode. I told an adult, as I thought I was going to die. I know; I jeopardized everything I worked for these past years. I wish had been more judicious, but a 3 day suspension was already inflicted upon myself and two other girls for eating it. A 5 day for the boy who brought it. I am very concerned at my chances of college admission now. I always wanted to attend a prestigious school, but now I fear it's out of the question. How harshly will colleges view this incident??

Part of that depends on the way it appears in your college records, including your guidance counselor’s report. You should ask your GC exactly how the will be presented.

The good news is that you are a junior. For regular decision apps, you have a whole year to stay out of trouble. On applications that give you a chance to discuss extenuating circumstances, you can tell your story just as you did here and make the point that a year has passed with no further misbehavior. Your guidance counselor can make the same point, and that will carry a lot of weight. Keep up your grades and activities to cement your case.

EDIT. And I really mean it about telling your story the way you’ve told it here. It’s usually hard to believe that a student who gets caught high or in possession was only guilty that one time. In your case, it’s clear that you got caught because it was your first time. You and your GC really need to drive that point home.

Thank you so much for your time and advice. Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. I will be sure to talk to my GC after break ends.

It will hurt your chances like a torpedo but, the titanic didn’t sink because of a torpedo!

The fact you freaked out and had an episode after sharing parts of a pot brownie is the cute and believable part.

lmao and your cc username is a drug reference. You’re a good student, schools will accept you, but it will likely hold you back in some way.

Daughter caught smoking pot in bathroom and 3 day suspension. She got into all her choices not Duke and your stats are amazing. Chicago school. U of M and Northwestern UIUC Ohio State and a fee other state schools

Wow, congratulations to her and thanks for your time!!
