Drug Use in California?

patientlywaiting- i've lived in california since I was six, and I've never been directly in the presence of anyone smoking pot or doing any hard drugs (now a freshman at stanford) and i don't have any friends who do them. There are some guys on my hall who I am told smoke weed a lot, but besides occasionally seeing them red-eyed/smelling it it doesn't change anything; they're still cool, and i go about my life drug-free. Now granted I've been sheltered because I've kept myself sheltered (in terms of never being in the presence of hard drugs) but that was my choice, which you can make too.

Wuts worse than drug use in California is crack use in the White House.

Only a delusionary cracked out fanatic would believe that there is nothing wrong with massive vote fraud of 5 million + votes.

This post is probably the goofiest post ive seen in a while. I wont lie we californians like or drugs. But who doesnt. For goodness sake kid, its college.

But who doesnt. For goodness sake kid, its college.

::raises hand:: Being an EMT and seeing the effects of drugs on people, I'm really not so big on them.

please tell me you were being facetious. To imply that drugs should be a simple part of college is naive and foolish.

well icarus if implying that drugs are a part of college life is niave and foolish than you can call me the long lost BUSH twin.

i'm sorry but i dont want your kind in my state! stay in ohio... besides everyone does drugs here. The real bad kinds too. All of us. 100%. so stay away! you will hate it. They will force their drugs upon you and make you get high. RUN RUN RUN FAR AWAY while you can.

...also california has better bud than canada. bc bud is a joke..humbolt's got the sticky icky...

it's not anymore of a problem than anywhere else. we're not a bunch of hippies, our government doesn't look the other way.

there are a lot of gross generalizations because California is seen as being liberal. Personally, I disagree that we are THAT liberal because we had somewhere in the 40% range vote for Bush- and that's crapload for a supposedly liberal state voting for an uber conservative president.

sorry i have not posted on here in a while.. tcolgate, i applied to calpoly in SLO

they smoke a lot of weed in cali. even in my high school. but it's not like if you're going to be offered weed every 10 minutes.

We smoke that herb like hell but thats about it...I have yet to see in my lifetime anything truly bad being taken in front of me...and I've lived here my whole life. Its just another generalization of California. You need to step of podunk Ohio and see for yourself...don't trust other's opinion's and views. Now all this weed talk has made me crave some....brb.

dont knock it until you try it. Mary Jane is a great friend of mine

I've got to look at more colleges in Cali.

if you want a school with no drugs, including caffeine, consider BYU.

liek, you've obviously not read the whole thread.. i'm a big partier and i love to drink.. there's no way i would consider BYU. the school i ended up applying to in cali was calpoly. how's the drug use there? i was just asking this b/c i have always heard that california had a lot of drug problems.. so much that that is part of the reason my parents don't want me to go there. i've told people from my work that i applied to calpoly and they were like "oh gosh, there's so many drugs there, be careful" and this was coming from a co-worker who does pot. so.. i don't know.. i just wanted to see if the stereotypes were true, and i guess it just depends like in any other region of the country. thanks for all your help guys.

Whatever happened to people simply avoiding us for earthquakes? I <3 the na

I don't drink or do drugs but personally I'd rather be around someone high on pot than someone puking all over my shoes. Plus, aren't you more likely to get in a car accident if you're drunk than if you've been smoking weed? Not sure about that but it's something to think about.

I read the title of this thread and I said to my self "naw, really? drug use in calif? whoda thunk? :::::wap head::::::
It reminds of the tour guide at vassar when a prospective student asked if there were drugs on campus. "Sure, you can get what ever you want"!

I agree with lily, they are going to be everywhere, the only difference is between where alcohol has a greater presence or not.

Patientlywaiting, Have you visited Cal Poly? If you haven't a visit may put you and your parents' minds to rest that California is NOT some drug invested snake pit. Cal Poly is actually one of the more "straight edge" schools in the California college system - it is not known as a pot head school but I also wouldn't say it is known as a big drinking party school. If that's what you are looking for, Cal Poly may not be the right choice for you.

I think the larger issue you will have to face is that you will be attending a school where the vast majority of students are from California. I think you will definitely experience a bit of culture shock that goes beyond the issue of drinking vs. drugs. For example, California, and Cal Poly, has a very high percentage of Asians and Hispanics and that may come as something new to someone from Ohio. You will also find that Californians tend to be into outdoor activities, like surfing, and are generally more "laid back" than people in Ohio. There is not as big a "party culture" among students on the west coast as there is at some of the large public schools like OSU in Ohio. You should also be aware that you will probably NOT know many people, if any, from Ohio or even from the midwest at Cal Poly - you will be surrounded primarily by Californians who tend to view the midwest as something akin to bumpkin=land.

All of these differences can be exciting to some people who are open to experiencing new things and meeting new types of people. On the other hand, some people do best in a more familiar environment. You and only you can answer which type of person you are.

lily that is most definitely not true. Weed has many of the same effects as alcohol - reflexes are slowed, and it becomes difficult to stay in your lane and at the proper distance from the car in front of you, etc. etc. And research has showed that these effects last anywhere from 4-6 hours after smoking a single marijuana cigarette (way after the high is gone).
The idea is not to let ANYONE who has been drinking, doing drugs, or anything else that impairs their judgement get in a car. Otherwise I'll be the one responding when (not if) they hurt someone.

I would agree with not driving if you are at all impaired. Whether that means under the influence of illegal or legal medications that affect your judgement &/or reaction time.
Say you have two people at a party, one is harrasing all the women, picking fights, being generally loud and obnoxious, and then pukes all over ,
the other is staring off into space and then laughing inappropriately while they eat stale french fries before curling up into a ball on the floor and going to sleep, which one would you less likely to want to be friends with, and which substance would you say they are using?
