My son got in. It is one of his top choices. We did not receive any financial aid information. Does that come under a seperate mailing? Or does no aid letter mean we did not receive any aid.

Congratulations to you and your daughter on her acceptance to JMU. I was just wondering because I noticed (I think) you had posted about Syracuse and U Delaware. Would you mind telling me (an ignorant juniors mom) something about JMU and why your daughter chose JMU over UD and Syracuse. I believe you said you were out of state so I guess it wasn't because of in state tuition. Anyway, any information would be appreciated!

That usually comes separately...I got in EA and still have not received financial aid information.

S received his acceptance today. (Yay!) Northern VA (Fairfax). Waiting to hear if he got into the honors program or not - we understand they send that out separately about a week after the admissions letters.

Accepted :). Surprised, but happy.

lucky and blue...........My daughter did not apply to Delaware. She has a friend who got in there and I have only heard really nice things about the school. There was a question on the Syracuse site of CC about Syracuse and Delaware and so I responded because my heart will always belong to Syracuse. We went to look at JMU last April and my daughter fell in love with it while we wee still in the parking lot. There was just something that really caught her eye. We did the tour and it was packed with kids and the tour guide was excellent. It was a beautiful day and the campus is just beautiful. We ate in the dining room and she liked the food and she just liked the entire atmosphere of the place. We had looked at Salisbury a few days before that but she loved JMU so much more once we got there. We went to Syracuse with a friend in May. She liked it but did not love it. Honestly, I was disappointed because I wanted her to love it. Not that she had to go there but I just hoped she would like it. I think the reasons she was not crazy about it was because the kids were all gone. It was not cold but it was cloudy and we saw no sun. It's hard to really get a feel for the school when it is empty. We were going to go back but she got into JMU and this is where she has wanted to go from the beginning, We did get some money from SU so that was nice but honestly it is still expensive and before I plunk down almost $50K a year I want her to LOVE it not just like it a little. Hope this helps. When we went to SU she did meet with the Social Work dept head and that was great and that is one nice thing about that school, you get accepted right into your program. Hope this helps.......be glad to answer any more questions.

thank you so much for your response, Judyrn203. I am asking because we are from NY and don't know much about JMU. From what I have read I think it should be on my daughter's radar (she is a junior) but because of the unfamiliarity she is being sort of closed minded. I am going to try to make a trip there because I do feel that it has a lot of what she is looking for and there were other schools that she had vetoed, until we went to see them, and now she loves them. The website says that the out of state is about 30% do you know if there is any way I can find out about kids from New York, New Jersey, etc. attending. She also sort of feels that it is a southern school and that the kids might not be that accepting of someone from New York. congrats again on your daughter's acceptance! Thank you again for the information and I do think that we are going to plan to make a visit.

I graduated from JMU 25 years ago, but even back then there were a lot of NY and NJ kids. I fact, I would say I had 8 good friends from NY just in my dorm. There are also a lot of kids from Northern Virginia ( basically the DC suburbs). That part of Virginia is not really what you would consider as "southern" in culture.
I don't know if that is still the case, but I live outside of Philadelphia now and there a a good number of kids from here that attend JMU.
Didn't seem to be any problem with kids fitting in. Good luck!

thank you so much for your response, PA Mom. I would hate to push something and then have it not work out. Based on your post there is no question that we are going to plan a visit. I think it has a lot that my daughter is looking for and she most definitely does not want to go to a school where everyone from her high school ends up (which is why she is avaoiding certain excellent NY state schools). thank you so much.

I don't know if this link will work, but this chart should give you relevent info. (even if you have to manually retype it LOL )

it worked and that was excellent information!! thank you so much!

My D got in from Maryland. She got the letter yesterday. She was not excited at all about JMU until she visited and I have never witnessed such a turnaround - she loved it. She had only driven through before - on I81 - not a good impression from there. She loved the school spirit, the activities going on during the day on campus - even on a cold and windy day. I am from southern Virginia and I didn't get a "southern" feel about the school at all. My D knows several kids going from Maryland. I'm sure there must be a facebook 2012 page - you can get an idea from there where kids are coming from - the kids from northern Virginia will not bring southern culture to the school. Northern Virginia is like a different state from where I grew up in southern Virginia.

I teach at JMU. I grew up in New England, attended schools in NY and PA. I feel very comfortable at JMU (not to say I wouldn't feel comfortable at a school farther south). I believe that more of the 30% of out-of-state students are from MD, NY, NJ, PA, CT, MA than NC, SC, GA, TN. Many of the in-state-students are from Northern Virginia (around DC), Richmond, and Charlottesville. JMU has a reputation for being a friendly campus.

thank you KatMT. These posts have sold me. I only wish we could visit this weekend. We will be visiting in the next few weeks. I think the school has many of the things that my daughter is looking for. I will let you know what happens. Thank you!
