My son has two Ds on his transcript, one in geometry from his freshman year and one in AP English from his junior year. He will be retaking both of them next semester, his final semester. Apps are due now tho? Will these Ds make it so he will automatically be denied? Is there a place in the app that will allow him to explain that he will retake those? He is applying to California State schools.

I’m a senior in high school and in a similar situation. I got a D in AP Chemistry second semester of my sophomore year, and I’m retaking it this year. My counselor said that they will see that I have it in progress, and can still admit me, but if I don’t manage to replace the grade, can resend my admittance. So I think as long as he does fine in the classes this year and fixed his grades he should be ok, but I wouldn’t take my word for it, as I am not 100% sure.

The D grades will disqualify those courses from being counted to the a-g requirements, unless repeated with passing grades.

In some cases (e.g. math), passing a higher level course can validate the lower level course that is absent or for which a D or F grade was earned. UCs may also allow some types of standardized tests to validate an a-g category (not sure if CSUs allow that).
