*A stabbing occurred at Lakeside Dining Hall around 11 p.m. Thursday, according to eyewitness reports.

It sounds like this was between female students. What the heck??

Something tells me that this was over a guy. Just a feeling.

*The incident happened about midnight at the Lakeside Diner on McCorvey Drive.

The victim was stabbed multiple times and taken by ambulance to DCH Regional Medical Center. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, said Lloyd Baker, commander of the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit.

The suspect, an 18-year-old female, also a student, was taken to DCH with injuries to her head.

Authorities have not released the names of either student.

Baker said the suspect told authorities that the victim and her friends have been after her for the past several weeks and that she didn’t feel safe. She said she went to the bathroom and noticed the victim and her friends followed her.

The suspect told police the victim started the fight, and she used a knife to get her off of her.

“Due to the self-defense issue, this case will need further investigation to determine if charges will be brought,” Baker said. “No arrest have been made at this time.”

Updated story. As you thought, Mom. It was a bout a guy.

UAPD and Tuscaloosa County Homicide investigators responded to a stabbing at UA’s Lakeside Diner Thursday night, just before midnight.

“On Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at approximately 11:45 p.m., UAPD responded to an altercation in a restroom at Lakeside Dining Hall,” said University spokeswoman Cathy Andreen, speaking for UAPD. “Involved in the altercation were two female UA students who are or have been involved in a dating relationship with a UA male student who was also present during the altercation.”

“The victim, a 19 year old female, was transported to DCH by ambulance with multiple stab wounds that appeared to be non-life-threatening,” said Captain Loyd Baker of Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide. “The suspect, an 18 year old female, was also transported to DCH with injuries to her head.”

Sarah Steeley, a freshman majoring in psychology, was at Lakeside when the incident occurred and saw the victim after the stabbing.

“I didn’t see it first hand but one of the guys I was with was in the bathroom when it happened,” she said. “One [of the women] was handcuffed [and] the other had blood on her face and thigh. She was sliced on the forehead, in the side, back, and thigh.”

Baker explained that no arrests have been made because the suspect claimed she was acting in self-defense. According to Baker, the suspect said the victim had threatened her in the past, followed her into the bathroom with several friends, and started the fight herself.

“[The] suspect stated the victim started the fight and she used a pocket/folding knife to get her off of her,” Baker said. “Due to the self-defense issue, this case will need further investigation to determine if charges will be brought.”

Andreen said the only arrest so far was made by UAPD, who arrested the male student, who allegedly assaulted the suspect after the original altercation that wounded the victim.

“The male student was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence,” Andreen said. “The three students have been given interim suspensions until the investigation is concluded. Following normal procedures, the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit and UAPD are investigating the altercation between the two female students to determine whether charges will be brought, due to self-defense claims raised by one of the female students.”

The names of the three students have not been released.

“Events of this nature are extremely rare on our campus,” said Deborah Lane, assistant vice president for University relations. “A UAPD officer was on site at Lakeside Dining when the altercation occurred, and immediately took control of the situation.

“The University emphasizes that behavior that is intimidating or threatening or that results in harm to others is not acceptable in any way on this campus, and violations will be dealt with quickly and appropriately.” Lane said.

Whoa… scary.

Hope these embarrassments are expelled soon. She carries a pocket knife? Lord have mercy.

all schools have to provide crime data…UA especially considering its size does really well in keeping students safe imo (and so does uab) but if you consider 30000 students (the size of many towns) these are pretty good, and incidents like this are rare:

Sorry, I hope the injured parties recover and anybody else that was traumatized by this incident is recovers, but I just laughed out loud reading about this. Catfights over boys? This is college, ladies, not middle school.

*

Right…and you must consider that this wasn’t an outsider just blindly targeting a student.

Unfortunately, in this country, some women are becoming more violent when they become angry. This isn’t the equality with men that we should be striving for. :(

I do hope all are expelled. Gets rid of those who behave this way and serves as a notice to anyone temped to behave this way.

I expect a curt email from Dr. Witt reprimanding students and encouraging them to refrain from stabbing one another over romance next Tuesday.

Awww, Feeno, I know your looking forward to it!

^^^

LOL…

Somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen.

This is more likely a “one off” (thank goodness).

But seriously, our American culture better not be devolving to the point that young college women begin behaving like thugs in “romance triangles”.

lol @ feeno
