For the past three years, I've managed to keep a 3.0 GPA or higher (with some exceptions), but this time, I really messed up. and was left with a D+ (three points away from a C-) in Chemistry. However, I did fine in my past two years of science and I plan on majoring in Computer Science. What are my chances?

I haven’t taken a standardized test yet (I’m taking both in the fall). My GPA’s are 3.0 or above (no transcript with me at the moment, but I will post one, when I get it).

EC’s: Wrestling (grades 9 and 10) and art club (11).

I also have a ton of programming work from sophomore year (C++) and from junior year (C#, javascript, ect) and graphics that I’ve designed for ELP’s (experimental learning projects). I also have three years of web administration experience (unnofficial), I am a part time dishwasher at KFC, and have been for the past year and my dad, great uncle and great aunt (all were first generation) graduated from GW.

Your GPA sounds too low. A 3.0 is not high enough unless you attend some extremely difficult prep school with grade deflation. The average GPA at GW is around a 3.7. There’s nothing to lose by applying though.

Brieb08-You are not a typical case. I’ve read your previous posts and remember you are from Hawaii and have some unusual ECs and a fairly unique background. Since the OP is a legacy maybe this will make up for the low GPA

that is true, researchemaven.
arv_m, you should apply even if you think you don’t stand a chance (although it does get pricy), because you’ll never know for sure if you don’t. get really good grades your senior year (straight A’s if you can) in advanced classes. good luck on you SATs and write a great essay (show them how passionate you are about GW) Good luck!

Thanks guys. I’m definetly going to apply and will study the hell out of the SAT’s. I also went to my counselor, and it turns out that I have a cumulative GPA of about 3.2 (without this semester).

Do something - anything to make yourself unique. You many need the job at KFC for the $, but a senior community serviceproject/non-profit internship – especially something particularly Hawaiian could set you apart. Maybe spend some volunteer time in a campaign for someone in the Hawaiian legislature or similar office – enough to get known and get a recommendation. What ever your interests are - maximize them to look good on your application. Or make your hard work at KFC etc look like your carrying your own economic weight, helping your family etc. A slightly lower GPA for hard working, independent, highly motivated kid carrying a heavy lpersonal load is understandable.
