DU FINAID Woes

Just a few words to the wise out there. DU is stingy. Unless your student is a biz school student, departmental scholarships are virtually non-existent. And what’s more, if you file anything more than a 1040ez or an extension of any sort expect them to push you into what’s called the “VERIFICATION” process. You should ask them what this is. It is a NIGHTMARE and if they try to downplay it they are not being honest. If I could I would yank my kid from this school now. Their admissions counselors were dishonest with us and their FINAID staff is not any better. Any school that uses the CSS PROFILE should be avoided at all costs.

We have not had that experience at all. My son is a junior, in CS, and DU has been VERY helpful, easygoing, and generous with their aid. We were selected for verification the first year, and basically all we had to do was use the IRS DRT (because of the early deadlines, and having to pay taxes, I hadn’t been able to use it when filing the FAFSA), and complete a brief form. Easy-peasy, not a “nightmare” in any sense.

We file the long form 1040, and have two businesses, so our situation is not “simple” by any means. We weren’t selected for “verification” last year or this year. As far as I can tell, they’re not adding back a lot of my business deductions (but I don’t go nuts deducting things, either - my expenses are mostly true, “hard” expenses of the business).

The availability of FA and scholarships for study abroad, coupled with the Cherrington benefits, was awesome.

Agreed. No experience specifically with the “verification” process, but was told on several occasions that scholarship would apply in 4+1 program, now told it will not. Considering a transfer as tuition goes up, but scholarship does not.

@Buchholt Thanks for your post. DS received his admissions package today and it contained a Financial Aid package with a 12,000 Centennial Scholarship and a housing scholarship of 3,000, making the net price $50,000. With an expected price increase of 5 to 8 % per year, we are going to pass on U of Denver as it will become unaffordable over time. This is too bad as it was on top of my DS’s list.
