Financial Aid is great. Merit Aid is very generous. Child finds the library fine. The campus is beautiful. The professors challenging. Food well not so good!
Denison is quiet a great deal and well worth looking into. My child is a humanities person, not a sports person so I don't know much in that area.

The other discussion was about a very specific event that happened a couple of weeks ago. As you have read the past posts (since you have an interest) and threads you can see there are many good things. No campus is perfect.

I think it was just a discussion that was brought up so that's why it was discussed. As a prospective student you should be interested in all the information you can get. Campus atmosphere should be something you want to know about also. When mine made there decision the better informed they were the better they felt.

I have no idea about crew. My child has never spoken about crew but as I said he's not that into sports, more arts. He does workout in the gym though and likes it.

Perhaps, but things like this have potential of obscuring the more important issues and aspects of looking at a fine school like Denison. I'm just trying to move this along to a more constructive track ...

What's the workout/fitness area at DU like?

Since your children made intelligent well informed decisions about their college choice I think you can understand others asking and wanting information on an event that happened over 2 days. My child was depply affected at what happened on his campus. He hopes it will bring about a positive change in attitudes on campus. The discussion here is no less important than the discussions that took place at Denison. Things never change if people refuse to admit they exist. So ask you questions which are of no real concern to you (since you seem to have had your offspring already off to college). If people ask real questions they will get real answers.

Every college has isssues that need attention. Hopefully those issues get attention and are not ignored. If I were looking at a college for a child and I asked about a situation that happened I would be deeply disappointed if I were lied to about what happened or if I was told it didn't happen. You may feel it isn't important obviously someone does. This is a discussion site. Not a PR site.

sideways, you've clearly illustrated my point about the fixation for poor old Denison on this event of the moment. Surely there are indeed many more important issues and aspects that others can share of this fine place.

Why beat the issue in a public forum like this one. And as you must, why not constrain it to the only other threads anyone's generated in the past 30 days for DU? And there are others for those who feel that need. You've even made it the point of this thread, which intent is to talk about ANYTHING else re: DU.

How's DU lacrosse this year?

Is the pool antiquated?

Why is the food notably less than what one might anticipate at DU?

You have no real interest in Denison. It seems easy for you to just toss peoples concerns aside to make some point that you have decided. You don't want to know about Denison you just want to dismiss anything else.

All things are allowed to be discussed. If people were discussing an event they have the right to do so. Like I said this is a discussion site not a PR site.

Are you children at Denison? If so then you talk about Denison.

Whatever you say. I feel your virtual finger wagging at me and the sting of your criticism. :( But alas, you're speculations are, off base. But if you're so inclined, can you please answer ANY of my questions since you seem to have a clear idea about what should and should not be of real interest and who is and is not interesting and interested? I guess there's no need to even ask the questions, right? You know them already. Many thanks in advance.

btw, like your screen name. Did your DU student or someone else who knows you well suggest it? ;)

Since when was it a prerequisite to have kids at a place before participating on this forum? You offer an interesting point though... perhaps your requirement may shed some more insight to the issue of hate speech and lack of diversity on the DU campus. Are there any research studies examining the genetic propensity for perpetuating those traits?

What year are yours at Big Red? Where else did they apply? Were admitted? What are they studying? What do they love about DU? What do they wish was different, aside from no resources wasted on sports? Can you tell us about the Queer Studies major? What was the weather like in Granville today?

Can we please keep these threads and your devotion to the hate speech event on the other threads? Surely there is a plethora of news worthy stuff from DU that interested parties would enjoy knowing about.

Whistle Pig To get the thread back on track, provided below are the answers to your three questions.

How's DU lacrosse this year?

The mens team should be very good. A number of key players return, including pre-season all-Americans Burton (A), Minor (D), and Nissi (LSM). The squad faces a difficult out-of-conference schedule (away games at Gettysburg and Salisbury State, two national powerhouses), but this tough competition should prepare them well for conference play.

Dont know much about the womens team.

Is the pool antiquated?

Yes. Denison needs to upgrade this facility.

Why is the food notably less than what one might anticipate at DU?

I'm surprised about the pool ... we have not seen it, but it seemed a bit dated. I'm surprised because I understand the program is nothing shy of super and tops next to Kenyon. As is every other place.

What's the history on the Queer Studies program? Seems a bit, dare I say, queer to have such a program at such a place. Antioch, I could fathom. Granville?!? Go figure.

And what about the Athletic Training and PE majors? These seem like outtaplace oddities? Anyone 'splain the history on these?

I live in Columbus and visit Granville every so often. It's a beautiful campus. I'm applying to their Cinema program for Fall 08. I recommend Denison - it's small, somewhat isolated, but if that can be exactly what some people are looking for. Denison isn't in the ideal location for me, but that's not what this thread is about.

Yes you've heard all about the racial problems. They exist. But the food and sports, etc. are what you want to know about specifically. Honestly, I don't know about the sports. I'm not a big sports person. I've run around their track before when I was up there. I haven't seen their pool or indoor facilities. But their food was good when I did an official campus visit. Great selection, friendly staff!

Yours is a particularly interesting perspective. I always find it intriguing how different folks see things from different points of view. Vive la differance! Why beauty pageants have such variety ...

Granville strikes me as a wonderfully idyllic "college town," sorta the way I think they're supposed to look. And I see it as on the outskirts of a bustling metropolis, not at all isolated. Sort of the best of multiple worlds, but that may not be reality, from what you say?

I know how the racial issues wax and wane on every campus and they are not to be pooh poohed in any way. Still, my point in beginning this is that if one didn't know any differently, they'd think the place was in total turmoil, going up in flames, etc. I know that's not the case, and I suspect the vast majority of students have an awareness of what the media has made much of, but most have not been engaged, for better or otherwise. Just the way it is. Unfortunately, these brief moments can not only change places for the better, but they can also scar them for no real reason. Think of idyllic Kent State, the last place on the planet to be seen as some hotbed of radicalism.

This is not that, but the dynamics are not fully different.

When I hear "College Town," I think a mid- to large-size city (Columbus, Chicago, Boston) with a major university. But, that's my personal idea.

Granville is not really on the outskirts - it's 45 minutes from Columbus. And it's a mundane between Granville and the city. Granville is very...quaint. The downtown is pretty-- err, very limited. If you are coming from a big city and like that type of lifestyle, be careful about Denison/Granville. That said, it is safe and quiet and very beautiful.

Just some quick sports notes -- from what I'm hearing/seeing as parent of recently admitted ED student for next fall (YEAH!) with strong interest in athletics.

Two campus visits this year. Nice field and facilities for student-athletes. Indoor practice field is a plus.

DU Lax -- 3 pre-season All Americans this year is an impressive showing. Two new asst coaches this year. 3d year head coach was assistant at Salisbury University and Gettysburg College, widely considered two of the best coaches in Div III. Just presented program at prestigious national lax convention last weekend, along with Div I coaches and his mentor from SU (7 natl championships). DU looking strong for a run to recapture the NCAC crown from OWU this spring. Appears to be good student/alumni/parent support for team.

Pool -- how can it be that bad if DU has been ranked this season at #1 in Div III?
