SMTD requires an artistic profile, which is outside the common app. The deadline for SMTD is Dec 1 — SMTD does not participate in EA. On this page, under “Need-to-Know Information”, it says if you’re applying for Dual Degree, you can apply EA for the non-SMTD part, “ but the admissions timeline for SMTD will not change.” https://smtd.umich.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/apply/
SO…D is applying EA to LSA. Does she need to submit her artistic profile by Nov 1? Or does she have until Dec 1. She’s getting conflicting information when she called the school. SMTD told her they don’t need her artistic profile before Dec 1, won’t even look at it before then. Admission Office (just whoever answered the phone) says all parts of the app need to be in by Nov 1. Obviously by Nov 1 would be safer, but she feels her artistic profile would benefit from more prep time.
Anyone here have past experience with the dual degree application process and can shed some light?
It appears from what you linked that she has till December 1st…But.
Email the head or assistant head of the school and attach that chart. Tell them your getting conflicting information. This way you hear it from the correct person.
We had a similar issue with a engineering deadline since 3 years ago the date on the website was never changed. I emailed the head and he was very appreciative and got the deadline.
Then… Report back and let everyone know. Michigan is usually pretty quick on responses.
Thank you @Knowsstuff
Do you think we should contact the LSA head/asst head? Or the SMTD head/asst head? Or both? Or should we start with the AO for our state?
Circling back to answer my own question, in case future applicants have the same question.
D submitted Common app by Nov 1, and SMTD artistic profile on Dec 1. And it was fine. She qualified for EA for the LSA piece and her artist profile was reviewed for SMTD. She was admitted for LSA, but denied for SMTD.
Congratulations on the EA LSA admission! Smtd is extremely competitive. She can find other ways to fill here time. Make your own path and still add what she liked about the program.
@Knowsstuff Thank you! We were pleasantly surprised by her LSA acceptance and not terribly surprised by the SMTD denial. We know there are some insanely talented kids competing for spots in any MT program, and especially at Michigan. She’s still thrilled with the LSA acceptance.
That’s awesome. Have her check out the many ways she can fill her time there. So many student organizations etc that have to do with acting, singing and the like.
