Hello,

I recently was accepted from my original school, the College, into an uncoordinated dual degree program with the business school. Though I am still officially undecided in the College, the major I put down in the app for the College is something that I am now reconsidering. I now want to change that original College major into a different major that is also in the College - from Hispanic Studies to Economics. I would still minor in Hispanic studies, but doing this would allow me to get a BS in Econ, a BA in Econ, and a minor in Hispanic studies.

I have realized that although I want the business aspect of Wharton, I still very much value the theoretical Econ course study in CAS just as much as I do the business degree. When I applied, I was going to trade the BA in Econ (CAS) for a BS (Wharton), but now I want both. I would essentially change my original College major for the Dual Degree into a minor, and replace it with another Econ degree. Am I allowed to change my course of study in the College, or am I tethered to that original major though it's unofficial and I am only a rising sophomore?

I would assume that I am free to adjust my course of study since I am officially a student of both schools now, but I want to make sure.

Thanks

Actually, you’re not majoring in ANYTHING yet, and won’t be until you officially declare your major by March of your sophomore year:

You are not bound at all by the intended major you listed on your application to Penn. Many students in the College–and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was half or more–end up majoring in something other than the intended majors they originally listed on their applications.

Thanks 45%er

I just wanted to make sure my adviser wouldn’t think I lied on my application, as my essay was heavily based on co-majoring in Hispanic Studies and Business.

You mean your PRE-major advisor–emphasis on PRE? ;)

They know that students change their minds about majors all the time. That’s why you get a PRE-major advisor until you declare your major.

Thanks 45%er you’re awesome - 3511 posts!

I was wondering if dual degree students instead of getting a major from both schools, ever opt on getting a major in one school and multiple minors in the other school - uncoordinated dual degree of course.

Is that possible? Could I get a major in the B-school and minors in Econ and Hispanic studies from the College? Thanks again!

Nope–not possible. To get a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences, you’re required to have a major. You can’t graduate from the College with only minors:

And by the way, there are no majors in Wharton–only “concentrations,” which require only 4 courses in a particular field:

http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/undergrad/academic-excellence/concentrations.cfm

Are you sure you already go to Penn? ;)

I’m aware of the whole concentration classification. I said major just because I will be getting the general degree from the b-school. Considering the fact that I am going to have to take 6 classes a semester, it would be awesome if I could simply minor in the two fields in the College instead of majoring in one and trying to minor in another. Doing the major and minor in the College with the Wharton is going to be a lot of work.

I got scared when you put the “are you sure you already go to Penn?” part. I’ve seen you call out too many trolls on the Penn page lol.

^ Well, I’m just not used to Penn undergrads referring to Wharton as “the b-school” or “the business school,” or CAS students who’ve already finished their freshman year not knowing that they have to pick a major.

But not to worry, I’m not calling out any trolls in this thread–at least not yet. :p

You’re right, I guess I should explain my phrasing…I prefer saying business school or commerce school to my friends because it sounds less pretentious (to me at least - I’m not a big fan of the emotional connotations the “Wharton” name has on campus)… Of course I was going to major in Econ if I didn’t get accepted into the dual degree, but now that I have been accepted, and am a student at two schools, I am trying to fully understand the terms of the Dual Degree to see if I can minimize the stress coming soon, lower the work load and still get the education in the areas I am interested in – we haven’t had the uncoordinated dual degree orientation yet since school hasn’t started.

Thanks 45%er

No problem.
You may want to rethink doing a minor in the College under the circumstances, and just take a few courses in an area of interest rather than do what’s necessary to fulfill a formal minor. But your advisor(s) should be able to help you with that.

And congratulations! Have a great sophomore year!
