Hey guys... I'm a current Wharton student. I'm looking for a more theoretical basis to econ. I've thought about transferring but I really like Penn/Philadelphia... And Wharton is a ton of fun.

Has anyone done a dual degree BA in Econ from the college and BS in Econ from Wharton? Was it worthwhile or repetitive? Did it help with grad school prospects?

I believe I can recall one of my classmates who was Econ in CAS and also a Wharton student, but do not recall specifically if they described it as repetitive.

I would think it is not depending on what your focus area is in Wharton, and even if you’re looking at Finance or Business Economics & Public Policy, I imagine how you approach topics in your Economics classes will be much different. Therefore, I do not believe it would be an issue there. As far as grad school goes, I think the most important aspects of your application would be grades and research experience; only with both in order do I think the Wharton component becomes a potentially strong asset, because it will show you can handle theory (CAS) alongside practical application (Wharton).

The one area where I could see confusion is just in the names of the degrees, BS Econ and BA Econ, but that’s relatively minor when such a difference can be explained (in the event people are unaware Wharton is a B-School).

I’d say investigate the option of a dual-degree and speak to advising in both Wharton and the College about it.

Thanks. I’m beginning to think its a really great option. It would be great to hear from someone who actually did it!
