I applied RD to the Huntsman Program at Penn… Got into Penn CAS, but not Huntsman. I’m not really surprised, as I’d never heard about the program until a week before I applied. But here’s my question:

Is it possible to get a BA in International Relations from CAS combined with one from Wharton? I noticed there was another post like this a few days before, regarding a dual degree with engineering.

Yes, I realize that an internal transfer into Wharton is still remarkably difficult, but other than that difficulty, would there be anything else preventing me from pursuing this option? Huntsman seems to fulfill the IR/business niche, but doesn’t accept transfers, or I would consider attempting that.

As far as “back-dooring” is concerned… Sounds kind of similar to all the internal transfers to the med program at JH… It was not my original intention. Is there some kind of stigma against it, even if it wasn’t part of your Master Plan? :D

Yes, you can get a duel degree. You'll have to make amazing grades your first year, then apply for transfer/ duel degree (it's basically the same process) into Wharton. Since this will be a duel degree rather than a joint degree (like Huntsman,) you will have to take more classes to satisfy both major requirements since Penn limits the number of classes you can use to fulfill both majors' requirements. This basically means you will probably end up with an extra semester or so of school if you try to obtain a duel degree.

There's not much stigma against transferring, especially since your undergrad years are supposed to be about figuring out what you want to do. Also, in your case, you're pursuing a duel degree, which shows that you're not ditching SAS.

OP, unless you want summer school, just major in IR and take Wharton classes that interest you and can add to your major. You can get a job with an IR degree. Jobs aren't reserved for business majors.

The joint/dual degree situation is definitely confusing. The Huntsman site says you get a BA in International Studies, as well as a BA in Econ from Wharton. When CAS lists the majors, they make the degree sound like one big BA in IS and Business.

Venkat: Good point. I'm not sure summer school is the best plan for me. Penn's financial aid policy for summer classes is a little murky... I'd rather not add to my debt, if I can help it.
