My son is a rising senior and is taking a full summer college load of 12 hours at Ole Miss. He took nine hours as a 9th-grader, but chose not to take anything his sophomore and junior years. So as of now he has 15 college hours through dual enrollment, and will have 21 at the end of the summer. He also is eligible for 7 hours based on his two AP test scores in Bio and AB Calc.
He is wanting to take a 300-level history course in our state’s history. He was told this summer that he couldn’t sign up for a 300-level course until he had completed 24 hours (Oh, how I am annoyed). When I mentioned the AP credits, they told me to have the scores sent to the school and they would put the grades on his transcript, and that would give him the 24 hours he needed to register for the course in the fall (we are terribly worried about the course filling up). Is there any harm in doing this? Right now his plan is not to attend Ole Miss, but that isn’t certain.
What I want to know is there any potential harm in doing this? I know that dual enrollment classes don’t affect one’s freshman status, but I was worried that applying the AP credits to a particular school might have the potential to cause problems in terms of merit aid and admission to other schools. Does anyone have any knowledge about this.
For what it’s worth, he’s likely to have 15-21 more AP credits plus another 18 college credits through dual enrollment by the time he graduates, for a total of as many as 67 college hours, although I suspect he will have an AP test that he didn’t or doesn’t score high enough for credit. I’m aware that many schools won’t accept such a large number of credits, and that’s fine. I’m really just worried about the effect of actually putting the AP credits on a college transcript.
Thanks for any advice, and @mom2collegekids is of course welcome to chime in.
