Dual Enrollment and Freshman admissions

How does FSU view dual enrollment courses? as AP or Honors?

In addition, instead of taking AP courses, I decided to take dual enrollment courses. I know that was not that smartest move, but I can't do anything about it now and I was interested in other subjects taht are not offered as AP.

They weight it .5 in your high school GPA calculation just like honors but you will have college credits.

Thanks, Cybermom.

Just to be clear is, dual enrollment classes are a semester. Does that mean that they would give you like .25 or would they still give you .5?

If you get an "A" in an academic dual enrollment class it would count as a 4.5 instead of a 4.0 in calculating your high school GPA for college admission. As far as college credits go, a class like ENC1101 (English I) would give you 3 college credits. This will help you finish your general education requirements faster and also give you a higher priority for enrolling in your Spring semester classes (unless you are in the honors program which already has the highest priority). One nice thing about dual enrollment is you can go to community college while still in high school for FREE in Florida anyway.

If you take AP US History for example and you get an "A" this would count as 5.0 towards your high school GPA. But if you don't get at least a score of "3" in the AP exam, you won't earn any college credits. A "3" on the AP exam would get you 3 credits for AMH1000, a "4" or "5" on the AP exam would get you a total of 6 credits for both AMH2010 and AMH2020. IB & AICE is similar to AP you get the full point weighting but unless you do well on the exam, you don't get college credit.

You can also earn college credits by passing CLEP exams but there is no impact to your GPA. For example you can take the PreCalculus CLEP exam and get at least a "50" you would get 5 credits for MAC1147.

FSU also gives 3 college credits for ENC1101 based on achieving a 650 Verbal SAT score or 29 on the English ACT. You can have 3 credits for MAC1105 by achieving a 680 Math SAT score or 30 on the Math ACT.

cybermom,

It seems that dual enrollment as weighted as AP because dual enrollment classes are only a semester.

I was asking because UF treats them like honors. For example, if you took ENC 1101, and you get B, you would get 3.25.

I just called admission just to make sure and I verified that if you receive a "B" in ENC1101 via dual enrollment, FSU will weight your high school GPA 3.5. Grades below "C" are not weighted. Remember that your college GPA will not be weighted and the dual enrollment grade will follow you so a "B" would be a 3.0 on your college GPA.

Q: Are Honors, AP, IB, and AICE classes weighed?

Yes. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and AICE courses in which you receive a C or better are weighted a full point; Honors and Dual Enrollment a half point.

There is an interesting new Florida Statute that now requires high schools that weigh classes for weighted GPA's to weigh dual enrollment classes on par with AP classes rather than Honors classes. I have been watching to see of the University weighting would eventually do the same, but so far FSU continues to weigh dual enrollment classes the same as Honors.
