Dual-enrollment class questions

Hi, I posted my questions in another tread but didn't notice that tread is two months old. Will appreciate any answers or info.

My S, a senior, had a dual-enrollment class earned a local community college credit. His HS transcript doesn't state that course as a dual enrollment course, and the title of the course are different. I guess he needs to send in the community college's official transcript. My first question is: does he need to inform the colleges' admission offices that course is indeed a dual enrollment course?

My other question is: My S also took a Geometry course (at the same community college) in the summer right before he entered high school. The admission offices will see this Geometry course for sure, but does he need to list it in Common App too? Does this course counts as 9th grade class taken or not?

If the dual enrollment course is an actual college level course (e.g. calculus or higher level math, or other course transferable to a university for subject credit), he should note that it is, since university admissions will see an actual college level course as better than or equal to a high school AP or honors course.

And realize that not all schools accept dual credit. In Texas, the state schools and junior colleges accept the credit, but many out-of-state schools do not, and some privates also do not.

Thanks, ucbalumnus.

The dual enrollment course is just an “intro to computer/tech” kind of course.

The Geometry course was actually taken at the community college, but when my S entered high school, he repeated Geometry again because his HS doesn’t admit any course taken outside besides Language. (My S and I thought that Geometry is required for HS graduation at that time.)

I don’t think one ever gets credit for a dual credit course listed on a high school transcript. One sends a transcript from the college issuing credit to the college one is attending. The institution the student is attending will determine how much credit (and for what) the student receives.

D1 took a course called “Anatomy” by her high school but “Human Biology” by the LAC issuing the credit. We only sent the hs transcripts at application time and a transcript from the LAC after acceptance/decision to attend.

I think it depends on the college that you are applying to. I think one of my son’s colleges asked the specific queation - about dual enrollment courses and if so, please also forward the college transcript as part of the application package. I will look when I go home tonight. Many colleges do not take the credit but many do. My D1 is at a top 20 school and they took it. He first had his college transcript sent to his university, then he met with his advisor and spoke about the classes that he had taken and he was approved the credit.

S2 took two dual enrollment classes his senior yr. as part of a program run by the county for jrs. and srs. The classes replaced two h.s. electives. The classes anad books were free for county h.s. students in the program. He was excused from h.s early each day because of taking the CC class each sem. The classes were weighted as “honors” for his h.s. gpa.

Our state u. system allows CC credits to transfer so it worked out well for him.

I noticed on his college transcript that he was admitted as a “dual enrollment” student rather than “freshman”. Wonder if that played a part in admissions.

We found it to be an awesome deal when the credits get accepted. No charge for the courses for high school students as long as they earn a C. D1 is two credits short of sophmore standing, but was still considered a new freshman for fin aid. Now, will she get done in 3 years? No. But when she applies to the very competative hospital program next year for clinicals, she’ll have more hours in more advanced classes.

I know the best bet is not to bank on getting the credits, but for students looking at state schools and nearby LACs that have articulation agreements, it could be a real money saver.

Thanks for everyone who helps out here–sptch, ordinarylives, kleibo, and PackMom–great info from you guys.

My S and I are not worrying about the credits yet. We just don’t know if my S has to specifically list it on the common app, since his HS transcript already reports the class.

My Daughter is taking 2 Dual enrollment courses this semester and will take 2-3 in the spring. Next year she will take at least 4 each semester. So far Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, FSU and U Miami have all said that they will transfer the credits, some have said that because she will be a Marine Bio Major they may request she retake classes in her major but she can appeal.

Oops I forgot they did say she will submit both her HS Transcript and Her Community College Transcript.
