Is it harder to get into something like Economics and International Relations or Economics and Modern History than just International Relations or Modern History? I would like to study one of those two along with econ but don’t want to jeopardize my admissions chances by applying a two subject course if it will be harder.
It’s only harder in that both departments have to give you the green light. If you are well-qualified it’s not a problem. You can apply to 2 courses as well (just be careful that you can write a good essay that would cover both). Fwiw, IR is the most over-subscribed and popular course for Americans to apply to.
Best advice: read the course descriptions carefully - down to the modules for each course. It will help you pick which one(s) to actually apply to, and help you shape your essay.
