Dual-Major Question?

Hi there,

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm still a little confused about all of this so please bear with me!

I understand that dual majors are a possibility at Rochester. However, can those majors cross over the different campuses/schools? For example... Could I get a degree from Eastman School of Music, and then a second degree in, say, Chemistry?

Thank you (:

In order to pursue a degree at Eastman you would have to apply to the Eastman School of Music (includes an audition). There are some River Campus students who apply to both the University of Rochester AND the Eastman School of Music. These students are pursuing a “Dual Degree”. Both application processes are completely separate.

If you are a student on the River Campus, (the School of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering), it is very easy to double major thanks to the University of Rochester’s Open Curriculum. These majors will fall under the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Engineering categories.

It is called double degree, and yes you are allowed to do it but it can be very difficult. You have to accepted to both Eastman and the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering. It is also pretty difficult because of conflicting requirements. I assume from your name that you play saxaphone. As a sax major, you will be required to play in the wind ensemble every semester. It rehearses 3 afternoons a week for 2 hours each day. You can’t miss and you can’t get out of it for a semester. There will be likely be chem labs that meet in the afternoon that will be required for a chem major that meet at the same time as wind ensemble. Again, you can’t get a degree in chem if you don’t take the labs. Also, you will likely need 5 years to complete both majors. Finally, it can be difficult to move back and forth between the 2 campuses for all the classes you will need at both places. They do have a bus, but still, not always easy to do. You might want to look at Oberlin’s double degree program which is all on one campus and makes it a bit easier to do.

YES, of course you can, you can take any classes in UR, as long as you finish all the courses requied by thoses majors.
