Dual Majors in Math & Economics. Possible? Difficult?

Hi, All,

I will be a freshman 2009. I am trying to figure out if I should double major in Math and Economics in LAS. I need some help from you/those who have some kind of experience with double majors at LAS in UIUC.

First of all, I'd like to say that I am aware of Actuarial Science program (which involved both Math and Economics) within Math department. I had thought about it, but I thought it was too narrow for my future careers (I have not totally decided which job areas I really like to be in yet). So, I crossed it out.

Secondly, I thoguht about having a minor in Economics. However, I noticed that the Economics was not listed as a possible Minor option at LAS. (Weird?)

I'd like to know if dual majors in Math & Economics are possible and how difficult it will be for a student who is strong at Math but weak at Economics?

I appreaciate your inputs/comments.

I’m not in LAS nor am I a dual major, but make sure you know that’s what you want to do before you do it. A dual major is tough, no matter what it consists of. You’ll have literally no free electives, which means few if any blowoff classes.

Thanks for your comments.

I know dual major is tough. That’s why I am psoting here. Kind of scared. :frowning:

If Economics is an option as minor, that’d be perfect. I guess I should ask UIUC acedemic advisor to see if I can have economics as a minor. I really think it is strange that it is not listed as a minor. What is so special about Economics?
