Dude w/ The Carolina Fever Needs Chanced

Hey guys, I had a thread here awhile back about my shot at UNC but some things have changed so I though I would post a new to get some impressions if you guys don't mind.I have the dream of getting into UNC-Chapel Hill. I have visited 3 times already and am going back again to visit this summer. I really believe I belong here. I know how ridiculous it is for out-of-staters to gain admission here, but I am in West Virginia, which is an under-represented state

Sex: M
Ethnicity: White
State: WV
School: Public

Top 10% of class

UW GPA: 3.7
W GPA: 3.9
(Keep in mind my school doesn't offer a plethora of AP's. You cannot take any freshman year, may take 1 soph. year (AP Euro History), which I took, and a few more Jr. and Sr. years that I am taking and will load up on AP's next year. So Im pretty much taking the most rigorous classes I can. Also, my school doesn't weight honors courses if that matters because I know of some that do.) Upward trend as well.

AP's taken once I'm out of HS:
AP Euro
AP Language
AP US Government
AP Literature
AP US History
AP Physics
AP Chemistry
(Scored a 2 on both Gov and Language exams. Awful, I know)

SAT I:
CR-700
M-650
W-740
1390 / 2090

EC's:
2 years of lacrosse(we didn't have a lacrosse team when I was an under-classman and we aren't even funded by the board so we hold fundraisers and raise money a lot. Thinking of writing an essay on how the team pulled together so we could be able to have a team.)
1st team all-state Lacrosse
2 years of JV basketball
2 years of Varsity Tennis
President of DECA
VP of FCA
Founder of the school Dance Club
Involved with student Government
Young Democrats Club
Steady part-time job

Volunteering:
I'd say about 100+ Hours as of now.
Relay For Life
Very involved in my church (Have gone to Haiti and Jamaica and have had wonderful experiences there. Thinking of maybe writing an essay on this as well.)
Campaign work for senator
Literacy Volunteer

Awards:
National Honor Society
Rotary Youth Leadership Award
All-State in Lacrosse (Midfielder)
Mountaineer Boys State (SC Justice)

Recs:
Counselor:decent? I don't even know her
Teacher:Good
Lax Coach: Good

Hook: 5 year subscriber to Tar Heel Monthly, # of visits I've taken to Chapel Hill.

Here's a predicament of mine: I am registered to take the SAT again on Oct. 10. I have not taken any SAT II's as of yet, but I do wish to take at least two. But you are cannot take SAT II's the same day as the SAT meaning the earliest I would be able to take them would be the November date. So applying early would be impossible pretty much, right? And won't I have a better shot applying early and let them know I will go there if admitted?I fon't think I should apply without having taken no SAT II's because of how difficult admission is.

So what do you guys believe my chances are and what all I can do to help my chance. As I said before, I don't really even want to go to college if not Carolina. Nowhere else feels as right. Thanks so much for reading. I appreciate any and all feedback. It's just really important to me. I have wanted to go here since grade school.

I wouldn’t worry so much about SAT II’s. Everyone on here puts a lot of weight on them, but they aren’t going to make or break your application that much. Go ahead, apply early and make sure your essays are awesome. Your SAT are good, and you’re definitely right about WV being underrepresented, and your grades and ECs are good considering the circumstances. You have a good chance and good luck! (:

Thanks so much. I am working on my essays atm, but I don’t seem as qualified as some of the people on here who will be applying to half of the Ivies anyway.

Haha yeah I know what you feel like. CC is ridic though and everyone’s just trying to make themselves look better. Hey, I mean, I got an 1870 on the SAT and I’m pretty sure it’s alright for UNC in state haha…I’m not HALF as qualified for Ivies as most people on here.

But hey, what part of WV are you from? I go up there every summer for ASP, and I LOVE it! :)

Oh, I am in Buckhannon, a basically deserted small town that many are surprised has internet access.

Anyway, I am going down to Chapel Hill AGAIN next week, and I’ll be sure to get some of my questions answered. And yes, I would give anything to be in-state.

Haha, nice. I was in Logan County last year, and I was just in Wyoming County in June.

Anyway - have fun in Chapel Hill  When I took the tour a couple months ago, our admissions rep during the presentation was reallyyy helpful.

Does anyone else have any thoughts or opinions?

i don’t understand how subscribing to their magazine and visiting are hooks since they don’t consider interest

I would say you definitely have a good chance, but obviously you’re not a shoe in. OOS makes it ridiculously hard to get in…I say try to help that GPA of yours but otherwise you surely have a shot. Write a kick ass essay. They really look at that.

The admissions rep told me they do track visits and look back at it when reviewing applicants so it evidently does have some relevance.

well that kinda makes me mad bc even though i’ve visited twice, i didn’t stop in the admissions office the second time. do you think that if i had an informational interview with someone in the bio department that they would tell admissions about it? and i think it is wrong for them to always say they don’t track interest when in fact they do.

I don’t know ,but I’m sorry if you were mislead, but what do you think my chances are? My older thread got a much better response. Maybe I need to chill out, but it’s always in the back of my mind.

I think that overall you have a good shot. You seem a lot like me (3 sports, FCA leader) except your scores and grades are a little lower. But at my public school in MD a couple kids got into UNC and my college counselor told me that I had an edge over those kids. So if I have an edge over kids who got in, and you are a lot like me, I would think you’re in good shape.

And don’t worry so much about it. I’ve been dreaming about going to UNC for a while too, but shop around, I’m finding that there are a lot of other great schools that I would be happy to go to if, God forbid, I don’t get into UNC.

Does anyone know if having a cousin who attended would improve chances of admission at all?
