"Due by"

Hi guys,

I have a letter of recommendation "due by January 25, 2013." The exact wording is this: "Applications must have a letter of recommendation by January 25, 2013. All applications without a letter of recommendation by the due date will be disqualified." Does this mean I have the 25th to submit it or must I submit it before the 25th?

Thanks

This type of question comes up often. If you have any doubt, make sure the letter is received by the due date…actually if it were me, I would do it earlier.

You are sort of asking this question at the last minute!

The rules of English and the dictionary definition say the answer is it must be submitted not later than January 25, 2013.

Most asking this question wonder whether this is the post mark day or the receipt day. I say…if you don’t know the answer, assume it is the receipt date.

But it’s a bit too late for the OP to do that!

More and more letters of recommendation are submitted electronically every year. Not sure if the OP is the recommender or recommendee but if the recommender submits electronically today all should be good.
