You’re only going to have to pay the $639.67 by the due date (if not, the late fee is only $50, if I recall correctly, so it shouldn’t be too big of a deal if you’re a little late on that part – though you really should confirm this parenthetical). The balance (your amount of pending financial aid) will not be assessed a late fee. The funds are disbursed to UCSC, and they credit your student account themselves.

I’m 99.9% sure of this, though I haven’t had to pay anything out of pocket myself (since I’m a little older and get full CalGrants), so if I were you, I’d just call and confirm what I’ve written with the financial aid office.

So what you’re saying is that I can pay the $639.67 right now and, when I get the pending financial aid, it’ll be credited to my account and pay for the rest.

I can 100% confirm you only have to pay the balance your portal indicates that you will have after your pending financial aid. You just need to pay the $639.67 by the September 16th deadline. It is recommended to do so with a couple day cushion rather than on the day it’s due so you do not have to fight a false late charge.

The pending financial aid will be dispersed closer to the start of the quarter, but you will not see a late fee. If you do, you can easily contest it (only if it is in relation to the amount covered by financial aid funds). If you have Cal Grant B and are getting the “living allowance” portion, this will be sent directly to you after the quarter has started.

my financial aid is still pending? when will i get my financial aid… i believe the deadline is sept 16 and thats coming up in 2 weeks. should i call the financial aid office.

All “pending financial aid” in your finances means is that it is pending to be paid out. It does not mean that it is still waiting to be approved. It is approved. But it will not release until closer to the quarter beginning. And, in cases like Cal Grant B “living expenses” portion, it will not be dispersed until after the quarter has begun (this amount is paid directly to the student unlike most financial aid that is first applied to outstanding bills and then any excess is returned to the student).

You’re fine. You don’t need to call the financial aid office over this. As I posted above, the financial aid applies to your account after the payment deadline, but you are not penalized for it! The system can see that you have financial aid.

The only amount that you need to worry about is whatever it says will be the remaining balance after the pending financial aid is applied. Just make sure you have all your permissions set correctly to let UCSC use your financial aid funds to pay off any outstanding bills in your portal.

My bill for fall quarter is $7847.67
My pending aid is $8,473.33

Am I going to receive the remaining aid from the school? I signed up for direct deposit. Does this mean that I’m not going to have to pay anything by the Sept. 16th deadline?

There should be three columns. One says what is owed, the other says what your pending financial aid is, and third says what you owe.

In your case, your balance will be negative $625.66 so you will be receiving this as a direct deposit (since you have signed up for direct deposit). My experience has been that direct deposit money does not arrive until after the quarter has started, but my “excess” is related to Cal Grant B and not my financial aid going over what I owe. I usually have at least another $500-$800 to pay out of pocket every quarter.

To put it bluntly: as long as that third column does not say you owe anything, then you have nothing to pay by the deadline :)

Guys, Cal Grants will not be disbursed until the California State Budget is completed. So if you have a Cal Grant B and are hoping to use that money to buy books, there’s a good chance you will have to pay without the Cal Grant money and then you can get a refund when they finally disburse the money.

They’re talking about financial aid in general, not Cal Grants specifically. I just used Cal Grants as an example for how one type normally operates. So financial aid money can be released for what is not Cal Grant even without the budget approved. Remember, financial aid includes loans ;)

Should I be concerned if what’s listed in ‘Award Summary’ isn’t showing up on ‘Pending Aid’?

I won two scholarships, only one of which is shown under ‘Pending Aid’ yet on the Award Summary, it says I will receive the other scholarship as well.

Note: Both checks have been sent from the institution.

Call the financial aid office and ask if they’ve received the checks. I had a Governor’s Scholarship (I’m old </3) that I finally decided to use and it took over a month from requesting it to it actually being applied to my bill (it would have taken longer, but I asked for it to be pushed through immediately as soon as I learned the check had arrived). I had to pay the amount out of pocket until it arrived.

^Ohh okay! I’ll definetly give them a call tomorrow morning.

My financial aid page got updated twice this month already, and now I have 110$ pending aid that I have extra. Do we pay through Sallie Mae? I don’t get how to pay for it, and how they’ll disburse the remaining amount to us (does it go to our home address?)

You can use Sallie Mae e-pay, yes. Go to “Accounts and Billing” in your portal and click on the spot that says “Sallie Mae E-Pay” (I think this is the right title… forgive me if it’s not, I just woke up from a nap so I’m still semi-asleep). You’ll be redirected to a payment page that has your bills on file. Pay the amount that you will owe after the financial aid is applied.

To get the amount owed: go to where you can see the charges and pending aid, etc. The “amount owed” is the amount you want to type into the Sallie Mae e-pay site.

You will need to provide a checking account number. I believe you can also use a savings account? I just use my checking, though, because I never pay from savings for anything. No credit cards are accepted to my knowledge. I just paid mine off, but I did not see any new credit card options.

NOTE: There is a $0.95 convenience charge for using Sallie Mae e-pay. It’s not much, but the extra charge is still annoying.

Other options include paying a check directly to the school. I prefer the e-pay even with the convenience charge, though. It’s quicker and I have immediate assurance that I’ve paid the bill. I highly recommend you to print out a copy of the paid bill for your records either by physically printing it or printing it to an XPS document/digital document (my preferred method from my printing options).

Any excess monies will be paid to you either in the form of a check or in the form of direct deposit. I highly recommend the latter as it is much faster and with delays from every direction, you’ll probably want that money as soon as it is available to you. I have no experience with the former, but my guess would be yes, the amount would go to your home address. I cannot imagine them sending it to any sort of temporary address unless you set it up that way. Again, though, I am not sure on this part and it is only an educated guess. Do direct deposit if you can.

Call the FA Office as early as possible tomorrow! Their wait times to speak to someone can be terrible :(

I dont get it. To see the amount I owe do I look at that Ebill they gave us? Because If I look at that, all my financial aid wont show up. Only about three grants.

So instead do i look at the Financial Aid in the portal, where my financial aid is split into the three quarters and subtract what i got from my fall quarter to what I owe?

You do not have to do any math yourself unless you want to triple check the system’s calculations. Your portal provides you this information and it is not difficult to find. I’ve already explained it in an earlier post in this thread so my apologies for mostly repeating myself. I have put it in a step by step process that will hopefully help you find what you need.

Step Two: Click on “My Student Center” on the left hand side of the screen.

Step Three: Under the “Finances” drop down menu click “View Charges by Due Date” that is located in the “Account Summary” box.

Step Four: You should see a tab called “charges due” under a category called “Account Inquiry.” You want to click on the “summary” tab that is two spaces to the left of the “charges due” tab. The “activity” tab is between these two if it helps you find it.

On this page you are now at, you will see three columns: “Outstanding Charges & Deposits,” “Pending Financial Aid,” and “Total Due.” The third column (“Total Due”) is what you owe. It will say “Fall Quarter 2010” on the far left of the row.

Hopefully this helps make things less confusing :)

And I got charged for the orientation fee?
“his letter serves as an acknowledgment that your deferred reservation has been charged. The student fee is required at this time however your financial aid may cover some or all of the costs. You may choose to pay the $110 now by following the payment options below.”
